The information sources and tools I learned to use in young adulthood are obviously the correct ones. Everything older is laughably obsolete. Everything more recent is ideologically suspect garbage. I will not take follow up questions and I don't know why I even have to explain this.

Avoiding groupthink on tactics, even strategy, is a good thing. You should have someone challenging your ideas theres. Values are different. Eisenhower needed to hear from somebody who thought D-day might be a bad idea. He didn't need to hear from someone saying "maybe the Nazis are right"

I don't see a single puppet dong or butt in this

I hate to say this, but we may need Dolly Parton to transition to the Other Side and advocate for us there...

There is very definitely a dot com style bust in our future. The larger tech of AI probably survives, but the economy is gonna get real bad for a bit. I am sure our current leadership will face that with calm determination and in no way freak out or do weird shit.

NVIDIA and OpenAi:

Concerns that their “increasingly complex and interconnected web of business transactions is artificially propping up the trillion-dollar AI boom.“

I know about the vector space. I guarantee you the vector space does not know when something is closed because of a storm. I wouldn't rely on the vector space to know what's dog friendly or whatever and in practice, modern llm chatbots use RAG for that: they google it for you.

Of course Google can also have its values changed! People smarter than me noticed that long ago. But at least its a conduit to another information source, not an opaque oracle.
afamiglietti.bsky.social
Fair. Though the AI doesn't know any of that either, it's just Googling Things for you. Which would save time I suppose, but it's concerning we're solving people's lack of free time by encouraging them to have a machine that can have it's values changed at any time by Altman or Musk search for them.

I agree the immediate harms are small. The long term effect of normalizing "the way you know stuff is by uncritically asking the god-machine" is what worries me, and it worries me here because I think slightly critical use would eliminate the value add, so I suspect people aren't being critical

I guess, but when I ask these things questions having done that kind of work the machine never tells me anything new? Sometimes, if I ask a *very* specific question, but if I ask it "where do I go in city X" its just a summary of the first blog post on Google?

Someone I know recently used AI to design an invitation. It looked like the kind of thing you get from a template and some clipart, which is fine, but WHY NOT JUST USE A TEMPLATE AND SOME CLIPART?

It's funny, because it really is the secret ingredient in 2025.

(pulls out his monster manual, flips the pages purposefully) Looks like.... 2D4? For a first level encounter, but a wizard frog is on the advanced encounter table so (licks finger, flips several pages) oh wow, 3D8 + 4, and saving throw only halves it. Wow.

It was the cruelest emotion last inning. Maybe next inning? Oh, that's what gives it it's sting...
