My gut is that he doesn't have a political ideology so much as he lived in a gamified world with reset buttons and no consequences, and he basically got an idea in his head for a mission and wanted to see if he could do it.

The only valuable piece of truth here is that people react emotionally, not logically. Technocrats are often pretty bad at driving emotion, even when they're right. That's fixable. But it takes a lot of work and discipline.
