one signature of human impacts on the planet (esp climate change) is ecosystems becoming less unique—a process called "biotic homogenization".

it turns out that isn't happening in the global oceans!

colossal new synthesis led by @zoejean88.bsky.social on marine fishes:

doi.org/10.1371/jour...
Most marine communities around the world do not have any change in beta-diversity. Some are becoming more homogenous, but some are also becoming more differentiated. Fig. 1 from Kitchel et al. 2025 PLOS Climate.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Our new study by Jameal Samhouri in @PLOSClimate reveals an uncomfortable truth about climate-ready fisheries: adaptive management strategies can boost population biomass OR harvest—but rarely both. The 'right' choice depends on what we value as a society.

Reminder that @governor.ca.gov is reportedly considering vetoing SB79, the best housing bill to clear the CA legislature in decades.

It would be a *disaster*, substantively & for Newsom's political future. Really hope he doesn't self-immolate.

Tell him!

I can understand why NSF is limiting GRFP apps to undergrads and 1st year grad students .

What I can't why they didn't wait one cycle to implement after making the announcement.

But I do trust that the program officers are doing their best to keep science afloat under extraordinary conditions.
