"What I'm asking of employers is to be open-minded. Have an approach of being person-centred from a social model, not just about performance and competence. It needs to be more than that, more humanised way of working. Otherwise we'll become a society who's ostracised all your older Disabled people"

We can do better. Inclusive policies must be clearly communicated, upheld, and embedded in workplace culture.

This will help ensure that everyone regardless of age lives in a safe home. We are calling on the government to think about building homes for the future.

Safe Homes Now
No one should have to live in a home that damages their health, yet it is the norm for far too many people in England today. We’re leading a national campaign to fix unsafe homes.

We believe that reducing the demand on healthcare services through preventive measures, including home adaptations, is crucial to managing waiting lists and improving public health, whilst saving public money.

We need the national government to commit to improving the quality of cold, dangerous homes, particularly for poorer homeowners, in the forthcoming national Housing Strategy.

Older people and children are most at risk of developing health problems as a result of damp and mould, and UK school children miss more days due to disease burden from damp than in any EU member state.

Issues with condensation, damp and mould in homes are often the result of being unable to heat the property to a suitable temperature (due to inefficient heating systems, a lack of insulation or ill-fitting windows or doors) or inadequate ventilation.

"Not many people will go to a manager or to their supervisor and say, ‘I’m incapable’ or ‘I can’t do the job’. I mean, so you sort of just knuckled down and got on with it the best you can." Says one older person we spoke to in our new blog from our Project and Change Manager for Work, Rebecca Lines

We know that as people age perceptions of their contribution can change and be seen more negatively, perhaps you’re considered part of the furniture who gets things done but is less creative or ‘dynamic’. Where your long experience is not recognised as the asset that it is.

“Once you hit 50, you will always just be seen as the ‘safe pair of hands’ candidate,” one job-hunter told us.

“I am not saying I’m not, but I really have to go to interviews really determined to prove that I can also be creative and innovative.”

"Everyone needs these social connections. They are as vital as air and water to our existence. The streets, villages, towns and cities that we live in must allow for those moments of connection. Unfortunately, too often they create the barrier to connection, the barrier to community."

Today we are celebrating International Day of Older People! Let us know your plans to mark the day.

We will be celebrating the power that social connections have in shaping our lives and communities with this year's UK theme: Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections.
Good social connections in later life help maintain physical and mental health as we age including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression and dementia. There is a photo of two older women hugging and smiling. People aged 65 and over are the most likely to volunteer, volunteering boosts individual wellbeing, but is also vital for strengthening community bonds, delivering community services and improving our local environments. There is a photo of an older person in an exercise class. Easy access to community facilities supports social interaction for older people however, between 201-/11 and 2023/24 local authority spending on community centres and public halls declined by 19% and on libraries by 46%. There is a photo of an older woman smiling on a bus. Older people are more likely to have a strong sense of belonging to their neighbourhood than younger age groups, but in more deprived areas this gap is smaller. There is a photo of two older people chatting on a beach with their bikes.
