I am now getting close to finishing this book on nukes and it may be even better than the one above on secrecy. Together, they make a great pair of reading on the US nuclear program, the former providing insight into some export control aspects of modern science we are now accustomed to.

Update: What this domain looked like 3 days later as Hurricane Delta (2020) came rolling through.

Really glad they acknowledged climate change. The public opinion/policy pendulum has swung so absurdly against climate activism (for now); yet, that denial doesn't change the reality that the unprecedented risks and hardships to come with climate change and its threat multipliers.

The mosquitoes can get so bad there. We went in August when many had died off but it could still be a minor bloodbath in some parts of the trail.

One of my favorite experiences of all time was backpacking the coastal trail (with boat drop off at one end) inside that wilderness park. That was a very difficult trail, but incredible.

I'd rather be measuring these statistics in weeks (or even days), but I guess I'll enjoy these final 29 hours while I can.

On top of the threats to a functioning society, our career work, our hobbies, our mental and physical states of well being are being constantly disrupted just because the horrors are constant. All of this sucks at every level.

Yes, January, the month that comes around every 12 months to disprove global warming. (What's that, you say? The eastern half of the US doesn't represent the whole globe?)

Sorry, I didn't mean to distract from your cogent arguments on the matter, a paradox I've wrestled with, but while the studies of the SA are fresh on my mind, the parallels to MAGA are astonishing. There is a current in disaffected young men throughout history that draw them to fascistic ideals.
January 22, 2026 at 12:01 AM
From my readings about Hitler's SA (in the 1920s), the individuals that populated that group seemed to have a very similar mentalities and behaviors to those I see among MAGA extremists today, including those in ICE/CBP but also in the general demographic. Might makes right is a common denominator.

Sorry, I'm just confused by the points you are trying to make. I thought the now-deleted original post asked a valid question. For me, comparisons with Hitler's Germany no longer violate Godwin's Law; they are increasingly uncanny. That Trump now seems to be making the comparison out loud... yikes.
January 21, 2026 at 2:32 PM
WWII Germany displayed the same ideological chauvinism in conquering Denmark with its vastly superior military, and the US now threatens the same country's sovereignty in Greenland with a vastly superior military. The comparison is apt; what's shocking is Trump's use of it as a selling point.
January 21, 2026 at 2:22 PM
I don't think any other conclusion can be drawn. I had been thinking a lot about the WW2 Denmark analogy lately (upon reading "The Rise and The Fall of the Third Reich"), but in the very dark way that such an analogy merits, and here Trump blithely uses it as a mafia-like threat.
January 21, 2026 at 2:15 PM
No one considers the rise of the Third Reich without noting the mistakes made by the Weimar Republic and the international political opposition that helped the NSDAP thrive. Today, we see domestic and international leaders making the same mistakes against Trump; appeasement needs to be called out.
