This FCC does not have the authority, the ability, or the constitutional right to police content or punish broadcasters for speech the government dislikes.

Free speech is the foundation of our democracy, and we must push back against any attempt to erode it.

We have many more tough conversations ahead of us and much of the work is only beginning.

It’s not time to get tired, it’s time to get inspired!

I know that, together, we are up to the challenge.

And finally, I want to thank my staff, who have not wavered in their pursuit to do the right thing.

I am so lucky to work with this talented and dedicated team.

Amidst unprecedented and destabilizing times in federal government, where we have seen a regrettable exodus of experienced and talented public servants, you have remained steadfast in your work.

I applaud your commitment to public service and am grateful for all you do.
agomezfcc.bsky.social
I also want to thank the Commission staff at large for their continuous hard work and dedication toward the mission of the FCC.

I want to thank all individuals, industry leaders, and policymakers that have taken the time to meet with me to share their experiences over this past year.

Our conversations deeply inform my views.

I am encouraged by their strength and perseverance, and their involvement serves as a consistent reminder that this is the time to stand up for our rights.
agomezfcc.bsky.social
While they may come from different walks of life, they all agree – standing up for free speech, government accountability, and protecting our rights is critical — even when it is hard.

Through my First Amendment Tour, I have been fortunate to meet with groups and individuals from across the political spectrum, all over the country.
agomezfcc.bsky.social
And of special note during this second year as Commissioner, is the First Amendment.

When I first became Commissioner, I did not imagine I'd feel compelled to speak up on behalf of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and other protections guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Protecting consumers from spam calls and texts, and ensuring that they can reach emergency services in a language that is accessible, particularly during times of crisis, has not lost its urgency.
agomezfcc.bsky.social
Fostering innovation in telecommunications services by facilitating more opportunities for creative spectrum use remains top of mind.

My office has continued to prioritize the FCC’s mission.

Connecting everyone in rural, Tribal, suburban, and urban communities, and making communications services affordable, continues to be critical to our success as a nation.

Today marks the end of my second year as a Commissioner.

I am honored to continue working to promote a vibrant, strong, and competitive telecommunications and media marketplace that serves the American people. 🧵

Nexstar and Sinclair are two large corporate behemoths.

They are imposing their values upon the local affiliates.

And they are putting their corporate interest above the public interest.

It will continue to be up to us as citizens to push back against this Administration’s growing campaign of censorship and control.

I will keep fighting ensure local broadcasters have the independence to stand up to government threats.
agomezfcc.bsky.social
As this FCC considers steps that would let the same billion-dollar media conglomerates that caved in to government pressure grow even bigger, we must combat these efforts to stifle free expression.

I am glad to see Disney find its courage in the face of clear government intimidation.

More importantly, I want to thank those Americans from across the ideological spectrum who spoke loudly and courageously against this blatant attempt to silence free speech. 🧵
agomezfcc.bsky.social
This Administration has made it perfectly clear.

They are not afraid of using the full power of our government to silence government critics.

Regardless of party, we should all push back against this type of abuse that threatens free expression in this country.

This regrettable chapter is a stain on the FCC

It was a concerning moment of direct government intervention into business decisions

And more alarmingly, it involved broadcast content protected by the First Amendment and the law, regardless of whether we like that content or not
agomezfcc.bsky.social
Following those threats, a media company with an upcoming transaction before this agency caved in to government pressure and announced it would pull the show.

That is what ultimately led to ABC's cowardly corporate capitulation.
agomezfcc.bsky.social
No, this wasn't simply a "business decision."

First, an ABC reporter was told he should be prosecuted simply for doing his job.

Then the FCC threatened to go after ABC, seizing on an inopportune joke as a pretext to punish speech it disliked. 🧵

I’ve heard the same chilling message from broadcasters across the country.

This is what government censorship looks like.

Josh Shapiro: "I was on a Spanish language radio program in the Allentown area and the host said something really chilling to me -- that he now has to think about what topics he's going to discuss because he's fearful he might offend federal regulators of the president."

WATCH: On his podcast, Sen. Ted Cruz likened Trump’s FCC Chairman Brendan Carr to a mobster and called the government pressure to suspend Jimmy Kimmel “unbelievably dangerous.” FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez joins Chris Hayes to discuss that and more.
