The results of the first round in Romania's elections, with the fascist Călin Georgescu in pole position, can turn into a disaster. Romania is not US, with old and strong institutions that can oppose the dictatorship. Ukraine and all of Europe will also suffer if the nightmare becomes reality.

These embittered Putinists or Trumpists are in fact to be pitied. I watch them storm on Bluesky too, with the sole purpose of spewing their bitterness on people who just want peace and quiet. It's a great sadness in their lives. But, on the other hand, you have to be a saint to be able to bear them.

If I had read that such a government was put in place in a small third world country, I'd have been stunned, dismayed, and probably I'd have forgotten about it in one week. But when it comes to the US government, I'm horrified. I'm not American. I'm Eastern European and I'm absolutely horrified.

The great danger that Trump poses is the discrediting of international treaties and pacts. This may indeed make way for a new world order, one of chaos from which only disasters can emerge. That's why EU leaders have a huge responsibility in the coming years, which I hope they realize.
