Great piece. Finding cathedrals ‘uninteresting’ is an interesting one in itself. Yes, the more you know, the more interesting they are. But does knowledge of 14thC stuff have value? Does such knowledge itself constitute a barrier?

Some kids thrive under pressure. Some don’t. But we can’t get rid of it. Exams are pressure. They are designed that way. It gives school a lot of its meaning. Most of it. So we’re talking about getting rid of school as we know it? Society too?

As a parent I want X. Of course my child’s MH comes first. That’s a real difficulty for parents. But as a teacher - my job is to teach. A fundamental part of that is applying pressure, expectations, standards. If that’s wrong, please tell me. Change the rules

Never sure what people are proposing when they say stuff like this. There are undesirable consequences of everything. There would be undesirable consequences of the opposite. Of course mh comes first. But there are huge mh consequences from absence of pressure too
