In my mind the stilettos morphed into the black Prada stilettos I had been wearing the day when I first stepped onto the marble here. I wore a white angora sweater and I could remember how it felt warm to the touch when I entered the building, because it had been unseasonably warm that day. It was freezing in the lobby, then as now.
That morning, I had met one of the president's aides in the café downstairs. We talked for a long while. She would become over time a close friend. The equivalent, in some ways, to my brother in my childhood home. A vital witness against whose judgment I checked my own perceptions and experiences in my capacity as another American citizen bearing close witness to events, and in my official role as witness, drafting one of the early records of what went on here and later in Wash-ington. That day, she told me that if I stuck around, the candidate would meet with me. It was almost noon by that point, and she said he was still upstairs in his penthouse apartment, but he would come down to his office sometime soon to begin his workday, and he would meet with me then.
