Slide 1.

Peatlands provide a range of important ecosystem services to society. Human activity and land use change has damaged peatlands, resulting in biodiversity loss, water management issues, and carbon emissions.

“The problem to be addressed really is reducing carbon emissions from degraded peatlands by “rewetting” them, which is the majority. We need to know where this is possible, and how feasible that is.” - Dr. Shane Regan, National Parks & Wildlife Service

~21-23% of Ireland’s surface area is peatland (citation 1, 2). 85% of all Irish peatlands are degraded (citation 3, 4).

At last week's Explorium SpringFest, Corrado shared the value of bogs and how AI2Peat monitors them with satellites and AI 🛰️ To explain our work in a fun way, Corrado created a giant "biological" neural network by having the audience stand up and down and shout plant names based on "input signals"!
A man in a shirt featuring pacman characters smiling in front of a wall with the text: Springfest UCD x Explorium April 14-26. Curious about AI and the Planet? Meet Dr. Corrado Grappiolo from the UCD School of Computer Science. With over 20 years of experience in Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Corrado is now using AI and satellite data to monitor changes in the environment through the groundbreaking AI2Peat project. Want to know how AI can revolutionize nature conservation, healthcare, and industry? Come talk to Corrado and explore how this powerful technology is shaping our future. Ask him anything: AI, satellites, climate, and beyond. A man gesturing to an auditorium screen showing images of peatlands and a map of Ireland. On Saturday, we joined our member group, Kilteevan Tidy Towns, for their photography workshop with @tocharstories.bsky.social and artist Shane Hynan. We practised telling a narrative through compelling photo composition at the Cloonlarge Bog Loop. We saw lots of Hare's tail cottongrass & Bog myrtle!

Last night's Climate Cocktail Club touched on everything from Irish land use to equitable access to nature!

A key takeaway for us—restoration is essential because "we should have a massive asset in our peatlands, but actually, they've become a liability", by Fintan Kelly, @irishenvnet.bsky.social.

Thanks to @biggusdaveusphd.bsky.social and the Irish Quaternary Association for their brilliant symposium!

As well as sharing AI2PEAT & Peat Sense updates, Corrado enjoyed learning about other peatland research, such as these figures from John Connolly about the high carbon stocks in deep peat.
A person in an orange shirt delivering a presentation. He is gesturing to a PowerPoint slide which reads "Challenges" and includes scientific graphs. To the right is the "IQUA" pull-up banner with photographs and other logos. A series of bar charts titled "Land cover and "hidden" peatlands in Ireland. They show that Irish deep peat (4.5m+) contains more ecosystem carbon stock (Mg C per ha) than Amazon mangrove or rainforest.
