Psychological defenses are intrinsic features of the psychoanalytic worldview since the advent of ego psychology and ultimately rooted in the model’s roots in drive theory.

Rigid defenses against anger create a peculiarly visceral reaction against anger in the depressive personality. Anger itself comes to feel dangerous, as if anger were a wild animal that must be tightly tethered to prevent a rampage.
