The one in Falmouth, the Navigator! My other cousin was the president for, like, ever. He looks alarmingly like Al Gore, tbh.

Looool, I've been faking the family recipe for caldo verde for decades now. My cousin gave me The Big Version that's enough to feed the whole Portuguese American Club, and I've diverted significantly since I'm not hosting 150 for dinner.

I don't know if we can lay Gandhi's predatory inclinations at the feet of King David.

(Unrelated, a steer I took care of in high school was named King David, so I always picture the biblical king as a steer with big eyes and a pink nose. Very helpful.)

That triggers a dim memory, but I can't place it. Next time I get Dad on the phone, I'll see if I can float it past him and get his input. That's if I can get my old man to pick up the phone, sigh.

All underwear was cuecas, which sounded more like "quack-uzh."

I swear, the islands produced some weiiiird sounds.

The shudeish drift has driven me crazy my whole life! There's so many Azorean words like that, too. (I think we might be distant cousins, lol.)

It's honestly fascinating. My dad's family speaks a particular dialect of Portuguese that has sent me down many rabbit holes!

Luckily, I have a cohort member in my program who's Haitian and he lets me ask weird questions about vocabulary and practice bits that I learn, so that's a huge help. He's equally fascinated by the older colonial French overlaps, thankfully.

The weird thing is because I spent a bit of time working on Louisiana French, which is stuck in the 17th century in a lot of ways, there's a lot of overlap because of the colonial legacy and cutoff point from European French. So I get more Kreyòl than average, but the parts I miss are drastic.

Mostly in New Orleans, which Mike Johnson and the other GOPers in Louisiana hate and want to destroy. They'll tolerate Catholics who align with their culture war bullshit. Everyone else is an inconvenience at best. The Protestant commandments is a feature here, not a bug.

Honestly, the whole of the US is full of ugly histories. I feel so profoundly aware of it doing my work here in Louisiana. I love Maryland, the flag goes hard, and Old Bay is an anytime seasoning. But man, there's some ugly shit down underneath.

I say this with great love, honestly. Maryland made me who I am in a lot of ways. But man, we have a complicated and ugly history.

And yes, I refuse to elaborate. Talk amongst yourselves.

Maryland is the redheaded stepchild of Jersey and Florida.

It's so good. I'm tempted to make it my desktop background for dissertation purposes.

I saw it on Tumblr before Strange made her video about Dash Con 2, and how I cackled.
