And finally, the ugly piece of steel that Rafferty keeps whacking people with looks like a plane that the coopers would use for shaping barrel staves

And one of my former colleagues (in fact, the person who was in my office before me) is the proud owner of a 1937 barge that spend almost 40 years at the bottom of a lake with a full cargo of Guinness archive.waterwaysireland.org/sto.../story...

Guinness continued to ship beer by canal to Limerick until 1960, and there is still some stonework from the depot, cranes etc. on the canal.

There are definitely some fiction elements. The cooperage that is burnt in the first episode ran onto the Liffey, but they are seen rolling barrels into the Grand Canal docks, which was by the brewery, not by the Cooperage

Iveagh House overlooks St Stephens Green in the centre of Dublin, a gift of the Guinness family (Benjamin, the dead dad in the show) to Dublin, currently featuring Harakeke (an NZ flax) as a centrepiece in its flowerbeds
Harakeke/flax/phormium tenax in a formal flower bed of red flowers (possible begonia). Trees and people on benches to the rear. A single spear of flowers on the flax

Iveagh Gardens are to the rear of Iveagh House; you'll see Anne and Edward spending a lot of time looking out the first floor windows at the street. It's now home to the Dept of Foreign Affairs

Have you been watching House of Guinness? I was in Dublin visiting our funder (SEAI) yesterday, and their offices overlook Iveagh Gardens. Edward, the second (sensible) brother from the show was made Earl of Iveagh #houseOfGuinness

More evidence that biking is really good for you:

After reviewing 23 studies, researchers concluded that there a "positive association between cycling and cognition" in adults 45+.

This is why I wrote a paper on count regression, and in general am a big proponent of generalised linear models. Almost nothing is 'normal'/gaussian. Days off sick are very obviously a count (whole numbers only, never below zero) doi.org/10.1080/2164...
pgmj.bsky.social
For instance, yesterday I read a paper with a table describing participants' sickness absence days with a mean of 71 and SD = 88. Generating a random (gaussian) sample using these values produces ~20% participants with less than zero sick days.
A histogram with 10000 values using the mean+sd in the text, showing zero with a red line.

Exciting clean energy breakthrough if you missed it: Finland launches world's largest sand battery in Pornainen! 13m tall, stores 100 MWh of renewable power as heat in sand at 450°C for weeks. Heats homes/offices/schools, cuts CO2 by 70% vs old woodchip plant.

tl;dr: open research has been co-opted by tedious corporate interests and state-led regulatory exercises. Let's reclaim the experimental spirit of open licensing and do some cool DIY and community-led stuff. Let's build our own shit. #OpenFest25

Proton claims their “Lumo” to be a fully open course AI chatbot.

Luckily, there is @dingemansemark.bsky.social ’s European Open Source AI Index that makes clear that Lumo is in fact “the least open 'open' model” that they have seen so far.

We’re wrapping up with a roundtable discussion on Realising Open Infrastructures with @emmajnorris.bsky.social, @ajamesgreen.bsky.social, @mayabraun.bsky.social. Some key takeaways 👇

E-moto or e-scrambler might be a good start. But also, *cough*, the big problem in Ireland is that most of the things that aren't ebikes/pedelecs aren't legally around in the first place
ajamesgreen.bsky.social
I only ever use "pedelec" as a gloss or in a footnote, but I think the use of "pedal" really gets at the crux of the issue.
But I do think it won't catch on
ajamesgreen.bsky.social
This made me mad earlier today. A electric two-wheel dirt bike that can do 75km/h is *not* an ebike...
irishcycle.com
Here' screenshots of headlines from Cork Beo and the Irish Examiner calling a "Powerful off-road e-Moto" and simply a scrambler...

Meanwhile, other outlets keep it unclear with "e-bike", which removes the context that the Gardai had in their press release.

Kilbirnie at least, but now that I think about it, both South Dunedin and North East Valley have plenty of non-regulation streets, as does Te Aro, so I might semi-retract the last comment re: Wellington and Dunedin
