Or are we talking Buenaventura Durruti’s girlfriend? Also surprising if she’s alive.

André Marty’s girlfriend is still alive?

Conservatives have dreamed of taking control of CBS News for the better part of 80 years. They've finally done it.

CBS Has Been in Conservative Sights for Decades
It was once deemed the "Communist Broadcasting System" by conservative activists.

“CBS first raised the ire of modern conservatives in the early 1950s, when it stood up to Sen. Joseph McCarthy at the height of his anticommunist witch hunts.” Great history by @ajbauer.bsky.social time.com/7318570/cbs-...

Great piece by @ajbauer.bsky.social in Time about how Conservatives have been after CBS News for a very long time.

I wish AJ had mentioned G.H.W. Bush's ambushing Rather on live TV, and G.W. Bush's FCC giving CBS biggest fine in history for Janet Jackson, etc.

Wanted to work in Rather! I’m mostly focused on 1940s-1990s and didn’t have space to fully unpack “Memogate.” But yes we can certainly continue the trend line all the way up to the present!

I learned so much from reading A.J.—on why capturing CBS in particular is such a coup for the right. Revenge indeed.

If CBS had gone right in the 1960s, when conservatism was still unpopular and underdeveloped as a political identity, it probably would have failed. CBS going conservative now involves different market and political logics. May work, may not. But likelier to work under present conditions than past.

@reecepeck.bsky.social's book Fox Populism explains how Fox leveraged this new environment at the turn of the 21st Century to ultimately make profit in spite of never reaching anything like the market share of the Big 3 broadcasters.
ajbauer.bsky.social
With the development of small-batch production processes it became more lucrative to micro or narrow-target advertising to niche audiences. This dovetailed with the rise of cable television and ultimately the internet, which carved into the market share of those three outlets.
ajbauer.bsky.social
In the mid-20th Century most people in the US got their news from television. There were only three networks. Each had relatively large market share and sold ads to businesses hoping to reach mass audiences.

I think it's probably about hybridity. How do conservative journalists make sense of the work they do through the lens of professionalism and journalistic norms? And what does it mean that proponents of journalistic professional norms often interpret conservative news as exogenous to them?
ajbauer.bsky.social
Yes, though what is or isn't lucrative varies historically. Economic viability looks different under high choice conditions versus low choice. CBS' initial success was under the latter of course and it struggles to maintain its business model under the former, etc.
ajbauer.bsky.social
And yet you can distinguish between the two forms of journalism. Why do the two different forms exist if they perform the same basic ideological function? The answer is they perform different functions and those functions need more study.
ajbauer.bsky.social
Yes, agree that such a study is needed! Just haven't had the time to do it myself. Was hopeful when we did that interview study that someone else would test this but nobody has taken us up on it to date.
ajbauer.bsky.social
I'm familiar and agreed to some extent. Worth noting that few of those scholars explicitly study right-wing media of their times. There has been no ethnographic study of a conservative newsroom and until recently journalism didn't even consider right-wing media through the lens of news.
