The Barangaroo and Sydney CBD skyline at night, as seen from Pyrmont.

The lit up glass towers as seen from a harbourfront promenade in Pyrmont, with a lense flare off a street light. The city skyline peeks over a harbourside warehouse that has been converted into apartments.

To anyone in Sydney, these photos will be very boring, but they might be interesting to people who live elsewhere.

This is what it looks like inside Sydney's double decker trains...

#rail #railway #railways #Train #trains #publictransit #publictransport #Sydney
Inside the upper level. The blue padded seats are arranged in a 2 - 3 configuration. The seats also change direction (from facing forwards to facing backwards) by pushing (or pulling) on the yellow handles. Different view inside the upper level. The seats on the lower level are in the same configuration. Note the bottom of the window on the lower level just below the level of the platform. The entryway where you board the carriage (the doors are to the left and right of this photo). You board at platform level, then walk up or down the stairs to reach the upper or lower level. There are seats at this level designated for people with disabilities. You can move between carriages. There's an information display that shows which line you're on and upcoming stations. A network map is posted on the walls near the doors.

The Parramatta Powerhouse Museum is coming along nicely...

#building #architecture #powerhouse #parramatta
View of the basically complete front facade, as seen from Philip St Looking down Horwood Place, which will soon be redeveloped into a pedestrianised street called Civic Link, towards the Powerhouse Museum. A closer look at the sky bridge between the two halves of the building.

Recently, I posted the display screens on Sydney's trains, and someone asked if there's a network map?

Well, the answer is yes, usually on the concourse, on the platform, and on the train itself. Plus other useful info, such as any planned trackwork on any line.

#Train #trains #Sydney #rail
Trackwork sign at Sydney Central. Example suburban train network map sign at Sydney Central. Another sign, this time explaining how to get real-time notifications on your phone. And an intercity rail network map for good measure.

The public health announcement that time forgot...
A pandemic-era blue sticker on a timber floor reads: "Please keep your distance". It has two white stick figures and an orange arrow between them. The Hornsby Shire logo is at the bottom in white.
ajsadauskas.pixelfed.social.ap.brid.gy
Another of the interesting quirks of Hornsby.

Do you know what's actually in the bridge between the two halves of the shopping centre?

A bookshop.

So you can browse books while standing *above* the pedestrianised main street.

What comes to mind when you think of housing in a satellite city ~30km from the main CBDs?

Detached single-family homes?

In Hornsby, north of Sydney, it's mostly 3-storey brick flats (apartments).

#urbanism #urbanplanning #house #housing #hornsby
A typical Hornsby street filled with 3-storey apartment blocks. There's a wide front lawn that opens IP to the footpath. A row of medium-density apartment buildings. More cream brick apartments. A red brick building with cream balconies.

Some of my favourite artworks from the 2025 Hornsby Art Prize.

#art #artists #artwork #artworks #paintings #hornsby #nsw #australia
Tamara Dean, "Realms". Tamara blurs boundaries between humans and nature, and between what's real and what's imagined. Pauline Dewar, "Forest of Ghosts", depicts white eucalypts in the Kosciuszko Alpine National Park that are no longer able to regenerate following repeated bushfires. Bevan Henderson, "Missing Pieces". Painted over an old jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces, an old man sits alone on an old bench in front of a farm shed next to where his wife used to sit. He's staring at a rusted old ute. Wei Chen, "Hugo Visits Asquith Park". Hugo the dog goes for an adventure in the park on a sunny day.

Came up to Hornsby for the annual Hornsby Art Prize exhibition. It was held in a charming little art gallery in a converted 19th century house, although unfortunately it's only open during art exhibitions […]

[Original post on pixelfed.social]
This charming old brick building has been converted into a gallery. It's tucked away behind a tree at the end of a long driveway. Fluro pink signs letting the world know the gallery is open Inside, it has hardwood floors and many original details, making it warmer and far less sterile than many modern art galleries.

The world's second largest water clock, at the intersection of two pedestrianised streets, in Hornsby, NSW. It seemed to be partially functioning this time.

#art #sculpture #waterclock #fountain #hornsby #nsw #australia
The waterclock, as viewed from the main street, which sirs in s fountain. In the background is the bridge linking the two halves of the large Westfield Hornsby shopping centre. The waterclock, looking north down Hunter St, from the Westfield bridge. The water clock, looking west towards the train station from the bridge.

Headed up to Hornsby this weekend to catch the final day of the Hornsby Art Prize. (Hornsby is a satellite city/exburb on the edge of the Sydney metro area.)

#hornsby #Sydney #nsw #streetphotography
Walking down the steps from the train station to the main street of Hornsby. The main street of Hornsby. Aside from a short section on the left, it's fully pedestrianised. Once upon a time, there were two shopping centres in Hornsby. Then Westfield bought them both, rebuilt one, and connected them with a bridge over the main street and a tunnel under it. The water clock, which I'll do a separate post on, is visible here. Part of the main street of Hornsby, which has been covered with astroturf. There are Also trees and park benches.

I sometimes wonder if Mr Snowy Tanowy realises he is not actually a human.

At the northern end of Parramatta Park, near the cricket oval, there's a large fruit bat colony. Any by large, I mean hundreds of them.

#bat #bats #animal #animals #Wildlife #WildLifePhotography #nature #parramatta #australia
A fruit bat soars high above the trees. Brown and black fruit bats hanging from a tree. Dozens of fruit vats are hanging from this tree. A lobe fruit vat soars high up in the clouds, against a mostly blue sky.

The river runs through Parramatta Park, with the Parra CBD skyline just over the horizon.

#parramatta #park #walk #walking #nsw #australia
Pretty much what the description says. The grass and trees on the riverbanks and a bright blue sky are reflected in the river. Tall buildings stand on the horizon.

There are many cafés in Australia. But few let you sip a flat white while staring at an archaeological site.

So this weekend I went along to the Greek festival in Parramatta. And to say it was crowded would be a bit of an understatement...

There are two rows of stalls in this photo, but you might have trouble seeing them past all the people. The main stage, with the Parramatta sky line in the background. Let's Go Greek Parramatta Festival signs. Yeeros on a barbecue.

Some cute cat stickers and a zine I picked up at the Parramatta Zine Fair, by a creator named Sonia. You can see more of her work at https://www.instagram.com/maison.meowmeow

Mr Snowy Tanowy approves!

A sticker that says "Love Cats", another sticker that says "Make it pawsible" with a string muscle cat, and a small zine. A close-up of the zine, titled "A Zine for the Book Lovers by Sonia". It has a blue book on the cover, surrounded by cats. My Snowy, a fluffy white cat, examines the sticker. Mr Snowy says he likes the stickers and zine.

The Parramatta Zine Fair was an amazing event: https://gts.sadauskas.id.au/@aj/statuses/01K57VPVZRF45Q0NC4B5PYFWMM

Many zine creators from many cultural backgroundsdisplayed their self-published creations.

#zine #zines #writing #author
The main hall of Arts & Cultural Exchange in Parramatta, filled with stalls by zine creators. There were more rooms off to the side, and another room down the front. So many creators putting their works on display. The entry to the event. I deliberately timed this photo to avoid people coming or going, but as you can see from the previous photo, there was a good crowd. Arts & Cultural Exchange, Parramatta.

The Weekend in Wisteria Festival is on this weekend at the Wisteria Gardens in Parramatta Park: https://gts.sadauskas.id.au/@aj/statuses/01K4Q7J6XYTFXD30H23XPG0QH5

It really is beautiful seeing the flowers in springtime bloom.

Lots of people, young and old, are visiting the Wisteria Gardens in Parramatta Park. Here they are passing through the gates. Plants in full bloom are visible in the background. Crowds of people passing a bushes with white and purple flowers. Beautiful purple flowers, with trees visible in the background. Bright pink flowers contrasting against the green bush they're growing on.

Yolŋu power: The art of Yirrkala exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW ends on 6 October. It highlights traditional and contemporary works by artists from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land.

More info […]

[Original post on pixelfed.social]
The exhibition is on the lower floor of the gallery's (new) northern building Through a doorway. A hall of traditional artworks on a black backdrop. Traditional paintings on ocre, brown, and black bark canvases. A collection of works, many by women, that apply traditional techniques to modern designs.
