If this is helpful for anyone going on the social psych tenure track job market in US, here are my Colby (in 2018) and UIC (2023) statements: osf.io/ef7s3/files/...

My lab website has links to other people's materials. Of course the markets were very different back then.

New paper accepted at Public Understanding of Science with Nick Evans:

"Shedding light on public perceptions of scientists who engage in wrongness admission amidst a failed replication"

tl;dr: Wrongness admission confers reputational benefits to scientists.

Call for Social Psychology Special Issue Proposals
Adam K. Fetterman With this in mind, we are putting out this call for Special Issue proposals. You can read more about what we are looking for in the above linked Editorial, but here are the basic ideas and styles of Special Issues we are looking for:

    1.
Lay Down the Gauntlet: Guest Editors pose an ongoing argument (e.g., the importance of moral concerns in everyday life), and researchers submit their work that addresses this argument.
    2.
Empirical Contests: Guest Editors pose a single problem (e.g., reducing conspiratorial thinking), and researchers propose and test their solutions via registered reports.
    3.
Theoretical Debate: Guest Editors write a theoretical article and then invite commentaries on that article, followed by a rebuttal.

In each of these cases, the Special Issue is aimed at starting conversations that will have a strong impact on social psychological theory and the field. Of course, Guest Editors are not limited to the aforementioned styles or structures of Special Issues. We are open to all types and topics.

Out today! Our Editor (@akfetterman.bsky.social) lays out his vision for the journal. Specifically, he calls for daring research that refocuses on the human experience, tackles real-world issues, & causes (good) trouble in the field.

I saw it too, but now I can't find the post. Is it perhaps this?

Well... I never thought I'd have to say this, but my name is not John and I am not a senator from Pennsylvania. Thank you for listening.

I've been desk rejected because it's not "personality" many times.

Why is it that every time I accomplish or do something that I feel good about or proud of, there's someone on this here internets saying "Anyone who does [that thing] is a dodo butt"?

I find that many people didn't find the BS Index as funny as I did.

Still want to run the study: Does the word "priming" prime researchers to be skeptical of priming?

Will do! Thanks! I'll send a couple other (published) papers on wrongness admission too.

We have a paper under review showing exactly this. People rate politicians as more trustworthy & competent when they engage in wrongness admission (publically stating that they were wrong & have changed their stance) vs. refusing to do so, and it is decidedly non-partisan.
As I mentioned in the first installment of Regret Now, this monthly feature is my space to reflect on regrets, admit when I’ve changed my mind, and apologize when needed. I change my mind on the regular, but consistency seems to get more love; many people see it as a sign of strength and reliability. Maybe that’s why politicians work so hard to avoid admitting they’ve changed their mind. Some evade tough questions; others outright lie.

Take Kamala Harris, for example. When asked about her shift on a fracking ban, instead of saying something like, “I’ve learned more about how this impacts the working-class people of Pennsylvania, and I’ve changed my stance,” she insisted her values had never changed. Why didn’t she just say her thinking on the topic evolved, that she changed her mind? I don’t get it. I would’ve respected her more if she’d owned up to the shift, even if it opened her up to accusations of political opportunism.

Admitting you’re wrong or that your perspective has changed is tough, especially when it feels like the world values unwavering consistency. But to me, it’s a sign of humility and growth. I admire people who change their minds when new information comes to light. People forget that the brain is the biggest erogenous zone. Owning our intellectual growth can be oddly liberating.

I'm a social psychologist who created & hosts a monthly event at a local brewery in HTX (North Shepherd Brewing) called Pint-Sized Science. Beyond that, if I am not at home or on campus, you can find me at one of the other 80+ breweries in the Houston region.
