(This is mostly me making assumptions based on how I've observed it to work as a user. I don't know anything technical beyond "it reads memory".

In a case like that, the program will see that you are at a boss and will "prime" the relevant achievement. When it sees that the game's "got hit" code was run, it "unprimes" that achievement. Once you beat the boss, if the achievement is still primed, it unlocks.

I'd agree if the Switch 2 couldn't play both or if the boxes were radically different. But honestly this system makes more sense to me.
