ok i'm posting this collection of thoughts on my take about the language i'm seeing surrounding alastor's updated s2 character design

alastor's demon 'skin' shade is darker than before.

saying it makes him more representative to creole heritage?

not necessarily. creole folks come in all sorts of shades and so does the black diaspora

additionally, yknow husk is a white faced CAT lol. and i draw him with brown skin and black features reminiscent of keith david because keith david voices him.

i never liked the criticism of alastor's demon design not looking close enough to his heritage, because it's not something really present in any of the main cast...idk it always came across as 'black character doesn't look black enough' to me. which i find lacks tactfulness.

anyway, i don't think this element of his design needs the 'he looks better now because he looks more like a black character' commentary. i think that's kind of short sighted. and obviously, fuck the clearly racist takes

tldr; establishing a hierarchy of black representation is part of the antiblack spectrum. so for your consideration, maybe avoid using the word 'better' as your adjective for describing alastor's tonal change

#i've seen this take sooooooo often since the trailer came out
#idk why the design team made the choice exactly
#but he just looks a lil tanner and it's all rather inconsequential imo
#i'm just annoyed at how many white savior-y comments i keep seeing
#when i know folks irl with varying skin tones
#all in black diaspora and all lovely
#and to reiterate
#the racist/colorist takes are garbage
#this post is for all the nuanced folks out there
#like s2 alastor and i would definitely be shopping for the same foundation lol
#but i have family with a closer heritage to his that have lighter skin tones who were closer in representation to his light ass in s1 haha
#anyway i don't think anyone should care too much
#he looks good either way
#also just putting out there miss vaggie is very gray
#but we know she has latina heritage
#so artists commonly associate her skin tone as brown when humanizing her

new orleans mardi gras aesthetics, hoodoo inspired shadow magic (i know they walked back the vodou since they were implementing the hollywoodification of a closed practice n didn't want to catch that controversial smoke), 20s style jazz, jambalaya, an actual gator-skeleton-decorated bayou in his bedroom...

but folks still use the argument that they couldn't guess alastor's heritage from the media alone because *checks notes* skin tone...?

okay this will probably be my last post addressing the monoracial type of thinking so many fans(and non-fans) still have instilled in their personal biases when critiquing alastor's character design

probably (i hope so)

#maybe i'm salty because i'm an edgy mixed girl
#and i have family that are edgy mixed people
#and i just can't believe how many people still attribute such gravitas to alastor's skin tone defining the entirety of his cultural heritag
#i say all this
#while still prefering his s2 look LOL i do like the color scheme a lot
#BUT NOT CUZ OF THIS WACKY ARGUMENT I KEEP SEEING
#like the reason the media is obvi about angel's italian heritage is because of his american italian accent
#his hand gestures
#and mafia aesthetics (probably as dicey as the shadow magic but they are in hell after lol)
