"Real peace isn't just the absence of conflict. It's the presence of justice."

President James Marshall - Air Force One
Oh what bullshit.

It's easy for me to say this because I'm don't live in the US, but, from an outsiders perspective, letting the GOP run with this policy - allowing the ACA tax credits to lapse - effectively kills them doesn't it?
November 10, 2025 at 1:05 PM
I said in a post somewhere that maybe the GOP were taking heat for the shutdown (they were), but they'll definitely be taking a blowtorch when health premiums go up.
November 10, 2025 at 12:59 PM
He didn't.

I'm not saying he's not low energy or broadly ineffective, because he is.

But he's not stupid.
November 10, 2025 at 11:20 AM
I doubt it.

Look, it's bad enough as it is. He provided young, working class women to his 'friends' and the girls were expected to sleep with them. He possibly secretly filmed it so that he could use it if he ever needed to, but never did.

I think the rest is rubbish. Happy to take a bet.

My worry is that, if we build this up, and it turns out to basically what we already know, it'll turn into another Mueller report.

And we should remember how that turned out.

Bondi is even more craven than Barr and it will be spun into nothing.

Schumer opposed this deal.
November 10, 2025 at 11:04 AM
Schumer opposed this deal.
November 10, 2025 at 11:03 AM
Indeed. Tonnesen, a Norwegian philosopher, is famed for saying that thinking about anything but death is an evasion.

Um... I'm thinking that's just a bit too ahead of the curve, wouldn't you say?
November 10, 2025 at 10:59 AM
My suggestion is, take your head out of your ass and start using it to think with.

Honestly, it'll really help.
November 10, 2025 at 9:30 AM
No he didn't. He opposed this.

His deal would have prevented health costs going up for a year and then would have allowed the mid-terms to be fought on the issue.

He knew the GOP would reject it, and made it look like the Dems were the only party serious about re-starting government.

Oh dear.
November 10, 2025 at 9:28 AM
I see knives out for Schumer, but he opposed this deal.

The GOP were taking all the heat for the shutdown so this was, on one level, an astonishing concession.

But, if we're going to be cynical about it, the increase in health costs will not cause heat for the GOP.

It'll be a blowtorch.

The right despise the BBC on principle, and yet it's a cornerstone of our national culture.

They have folded here, just as Trump's grasp and power is weakening. They should and could have hung on.

As bleak as it looks, things will get better from here in terms of the balance of power. Honestly.
November 10, 2025 at 9:06 AM
It's a hard league. Did you see Villa's last result?

I don't think this run of away fixtures is the right time to make a call, especially when you see the names in the frame. They're all awful. To a man.

TBH I'd give him to the last kick of the season. It's going to be that tight.
November 10, 2025 at 8:56 AM
He stays for now. This is exactly where we thought we'd be.

And the season is very far from over.

If we were on 4 points I'd understand it.
November 9, 2025 at 11:00 PM
Maybe not.

I hope you're right.
November 9, 2025 at 10:37 PM
The US electorate is heterodox and dynamic. It isn't New York.

To win the Electoral College you have to compromise the message form the left.

On the right there are so many advantages. It isn't fair. But it's where we are.
November 9, 2025 at 10:11 PM
That's right. And we do that by winning.

But to do that, we have to appeal to people who are very distrustful of the liberal left - we know why - and are absolutely allergic to being lectured.

So, you need a leader who shares those values AND can win.
November 9, 2025 at 9:53 PM
Me too!
November 9, 2025 at 9:46 PM
Ok.

Let's take the heat of this. We both value human decency. We both want an end to this disgraceful regime. We both want to centre (there's that word again) human dignity.

We should look for ways to find common cause.
November 9, 2025 at 9:44 PM
Remember we're talking about winning the White House.

I've suffered racism personally. I'm not white. But members of my family are (it's complicated).

Let's get power first. This is what my younger, radical self never understood. Without that, nothing matters.
November 9, 2025 at 9:39 PM
So... remember what I said about purity tests on the left?

Let's do a check list.

Doesn't 'gaf about people' (?) Check

Centrist liberal worse than right. Check

Whites shouldn't be worse than brown people, but are. Check

And you think THIS is a winning platform?

Jesus Christ
November 9, 2025 at 9:35 PM
Ok. I'm not the world's greatest expert on Newsome.

He may be a scumbag. I don't know.

But liberal centrism isn't a sin in my book, very far from it.

And his ethnicity isn't a bar because it never should be, should it Z?
November 9, 2025 at 9:25 PM
I've never settled.

Winning is what's important now. A man who is 51% liberal is better than a man who is 80% fascist. No?

Or does he fail a fucking "purity test"?

WHICH is more IMPORTANT to you?
