Yeah. Backups are important. My method is to create separate partitions for /, /home, and /etc, as well as a catchall called /data. This way, if I need to nuke the OS, I can do it without losing practically anything. Just make sure you don't make any of them too small.

You'll be fine. If I wasn't tied to industry standard CAD software, I would have switched to 100% Linux 20 years ago. I spend 99.9 percent of my time interfacing with my computer just like everybody else does: pointing and clicking.
