Meanwhile, in the Interior of Alaska, temperatures are dipping down to -50 degrees F this week; Southeast Alaska is experiencing very cold temps for their area.Yet others areas of the State, where generally it is frigid, will have more temperate weather during this week-at least it isn't a heatwave.

With much of the country looking at temperature records being broken due to a late December heat wave, flooding is a real danger. In fact, more than 40 million residents have been put under flood watch as of this morning. Also, there is a high risk of major rock/mudslides and rapid rise of rivers.

While large hydroelectric dams have the benefit of producing electricity, often the disruption of natural flowing waters can spin off other problems. Iran for the last half century has put up large scale dams, yet with the pooling of water in the large reservoirs has contributed to local shortages.

With power outages effecting many residents in Anchorage for the second day straight, power for space heating is the main priority. With frigid temperatures and ice everywhere it is tempting to combust whatever is on hand, yet it is important to keep an eye on any carbon monoxide that may be present.

As one who hails from the Front Range of the Mile High City, I'm in favor of the name change that the U.S. DOE just did by swapping out Fairbanks's lab formerly known as "National Renewable Energy Laboratory" to “National Laboratory of the Rockies.” Much of the same, good work will continue.

With subzero temps hitting Alaska, there's no better time to see where energy is 'leaking' out of your home. First, look for obvious gaps by turning off any outside lights, turn the inside ones on when dark outside and then inspect door and window jams. Then use an infra red handheld imaging cam.

The equalizing term for looking at the energy output of fuels is MMbtu (a million British thermal units). A BTU is the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water by 1°F (under an atmospheric unit of pressure). Whether solid, gas or liquid- fuels can be measured with MMbtu's.

With the constrictors on airport travel this month, it will be interesting to see what the amount of fuel that was not burned- but also the tonnage of cargo that didn't get moved. It isn't just the lost of passenger ticket receipts that is an outcome when there is a shock to the U.S. aviation system.

In October the U.S. moved to put sanctions on Russia's oil producers Rosneft and Lukoil (effective Nov 21). Has it been effective...? In response, refineries in India and China have reduced imports of Russian oil as it now trades at the highest discounts per Brent crude since this time last year.

After Cuba was provoked by the Bay of Pigs to ask Russia for missiles, JFK saw it as threatening U.S. "credibility" and thus a violation of the Monroe Doctrine.Possibly now in similar circumstances with Venezuela, Russian nuclear missiles may enter the Western Hemisphere again per gunboat diplomacy.

One of the largest backup battery systems is operated by the utility in Fairbanks. While it allows for power storage that can help during outages, if utilized all at once for a community-wide blackout it would not provide more than a half hour of power. Thus roving outages are a more likely use.

In March Alaska's governor was looking at forging a partnership with Taiwan which would help the island in providing natural gas. Earlier today, President Trump directly mentioned while in Asia spoke about providing natural gas to China. With the animosity between the two, can both be served LNG?

Many recall the 1970's energy crisis being at the hands of OPEC- largely Middle Eastern nations. The oil cartel has been expanded to other nations from other regions into what is referred to as OPEC+, which is currently adopting a wait and see approach per U.S. sanctions on Russia (as prices drop).

Dr. Philip Wight (UAF) has noted that complex, mega- projects exceed a billion dollars, and though the Trans-Alaska Pipeline succeeded, they usually are failures in Alaska (due to large federal capital outlays with a small customer base). Thus large regional projects such as regional dams languish.
