The UK has a long, rich history of benevolent employers building homes for their workers, from Port Sunlight on the Wirral — built by Lever Brothers for those employed at its soap factory — to Saltaire in West Yorkshire, the dreamchild of Titus Salt and a place for all of his mill workers to live, away from the slums of Bradford. The latter had not just parks and allotments, but a hospital, library and schools. The most famous, possibly, is Bournville, just south of Birmingham. It remains a beautiful place, an idyll originally built not just for those toiling away in the Cadbury chocolate factory, but anyone else keen to avoid the smog and cramped conditions in Britain’s second city. Every home had a garden with an apple tree planted. Were these projects driven purely by philanthropic enlightenment? No, the employer knew that a healthy workforce was one that was more productive. There was an element of control, too — George Cadbury was a firm believer in temperance so no pub was allowed in Bournville.
