Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

100% agree with you. But it didn’t move the needle. We hire people who have between 10 and 13 h-index, 5 phd students and 7 publications in Q1 over the last 2 years. Quantitative is the same as putting the name in the call.

Informatics-Europe already states that (www.informatics-europe.org/services/pub...). Same for DORA. HE institutions are just scared of making subjective evaluations and prefer to use numbers so they are not accountable for the decision.
Publications
Read and download Informatics Europe publications, including reports, recommendations & best practices on Informatics research, education & policies.

I'll be spending next week in Singapore, attending
@sigplan.bsky.social SPLASH with Paulo (paper at OOPSLA on LiquidTypes for verification of #ROS architecture) and Catarina (usability challenges of Liquid Types at HATRA). Hit me up! I also appreciate tips on enjoying Singapore :-)

I haven't got the different between atproto and mastodon styles of federation. I still don't believe any of the two will become mainstream. XMPP was the closest we got: wiki.alcidesfonseca.com/blog/atproto...

This was very clever:

After collecting fines from speed cameras, Stockholm ran a lottery where non-speeding drivers could win the money.

Little known fact: reviewers can't actually hurt you if you don't explicitly invite them in first.

Ah sorry, no, my bad, that's vampires

I recommend reading Peter F Hamilton books. Scifi + Detective that explores how tech changes society (rejuvenation, sharing emotions in a network, ai, multiple bodies, teleport). Mispent youth is a stand-alone, but if you don’t mind investing, I’d go for Pandora’s star.

You did not ask, but the fear of trying things is much much worse with our female students. They are afraid of given (even to the computer) wrong answers. It’s a challenge to change that mindset, and I’m still trying to figure that out. REPL first is a good practise for the first couple of weeks.

I use the architecture analogy. How much does it cost an architect to try something new that may fail? What about an SE? Another thing I would like to include in Programming 101 would be live visual programming (Processing.js or sth like that) to promote quick iteration.

TfL loses £190m a year in fare evasion.

A lottery - with monthly prizes of up to £50,000 and 432 winners a year - for those who tap in could help turn the tide.

Alongside, of course, stricter enforcement.
