Conflict is curvilinear, too much closeness brings enmeshment and too much separation brings isolation. Conflict resolution is both de-enmeshment and connection. The dynamism of these poles mean that 'connection' and 'separateness' are continually, presently, renegotiated.

Readings on deliberative democracy and polarization in divided societies. On "agonistic pluralism": "every consensus exists as a temporary result of a provisional hegemony, as a stabilization of power that always entails some form of exclusion" (Mouffe, 2007).
