I went ahead and took it outside of the theoretical. Here's my manual white/black color balancing. The image on the left is if I correct for the brightest part of the dress is white. The right is if I correct the bands to be black.

You simply can't make that blue white.

So, even knowing that the item to the left is black and white. And seeing the black on that item matches the color on this item, you still see two different colors? They're both the same.

But these two colors are the same color. And one of them is black.

Also -- this is a picture taken inside a department store, with the clothing to the left and also the items in the far background to the right. With a wood trimmed center display in the mid.
