Opportunity to plug the local public library: when I rewatched Breathless before seeing Nouvelle Vague I found a wonderful Criterion disc at the Cuyahoga Falls Library. Always a great source for classic and foreign movies you haven't seen yet.

During covid he came to every game wearing the shirt or hat from some small Cleveland business that was struggling during lockdown, hoping to drum up business and support for them. A mensch.

This is good news, Brian. The transplant pipeline has been so unreliable.

Same with Apple and Highest 2 Lowest, which was terrific and is already forgotten. Filmmakers will start to notice this and factor it into the decision to sign with a streamer.

Netflix sure didn’t want to put any effort into an awards campaign for Wake Up Dead Man. It could easily have been in the conversation for original screenplay, Josh O’Connor, and (at SAG) ensemble.

Ocean Casino in AC named its just-opened mini golf attraction Ocean’s 18. Which is a good thing because if they had named it anything else you’d be out of your mind about the missed opportunity.

Wait -- aren't you on the call list of insiders he lets know before he tanks the market? No prob. I'll pass it along next time.

That Philly observation is legit. I see it in myself and I was 30 miles downriver in Wilmington.

Hey now. Being Ohio (my part of it at least) on Second Avenue means knowing what to order at B&H.

Yes. Akron, Ohio, is a small city but we have a fabulous nonprofit (fully licensed!) cinema here that programs really well — and draws an audience. We’re very fortunate in that regard.

Seeing it Sunday afternoon at @nightlightakron.bsky.social. Thanks so much, Jacob. I appreciate that you put movies like this on my radar.

It’s kind-of fun too that while nearly every story we have imagining Shakespeare’s life takes a loveless marriage absolutely for granted, Maggie O’Farrell decided “Nope! We’re going the other way.” Points for trying something different.

But there’s still no line to draw from a grieving parent to Hamlet. To Twelfth Night, absolutely — those reunited twins who thought the other was dead. You can see it in the late plays too, especially Winter’s Tale. But Zhao really had to cherry-pick Hamlet to try and make it work.

I like the story despite its premise being nonsense. And I chuckled at how O’Farrell shoehorns in explanations for everything from living apart for nearly 30 years to the second-best bed stuff while still making the case for a close, loving marriage.

My husband is so excited this age-inappropriate (for him) show is back! “Older guy” indeed. I’ll pass along your advice.

In the '90s the US figure staking nationals were held in my town, so I went. The early events were under-attended; I was the only person in the grandstand who wasn't an athlete, coach or family. I got to talking to a group of skaters who gave me a wonderful education about how to watch the sport.

Pairs is my favorite event in winter sports. When it's on it's just astonishing. The Russians owned it for years. The US program has been languishing for a while.

A while back I had the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cleveland in my will, for a few thousand dollars (assuming I still have it when I croak). I moved that to another worthy nonprofit when McKenzie Scott dropped like $5 million on them. She's fantastic.

Of course I never saw Judi play Viola. But, yeah, I’m imagining it. If only my imagination were as sharp as hers. “What means this lady?”

Fellow childless guy here. They will take care of you when you’re old and sick. I’m simultaneously looking after a childless uncle I’ve always loathed, while doing my best to remind the nephews why I bought them such extravagant Xmas presents back in the ‘90s. Glad your relationships are more real.

The writing in this movie is phenomenal. It's crazy to say about the third entry in an audience-friendly murder-mystery franchise, but I think it's maybe the sharpest screenplay at least since Parasite. I hope @rianjohnson.bsky.social gets the awards attention (and eyes on the film) he deserves.

You could tip delivery kids with subway tokens.
