A load-bearing part of the UK - the economy of many small towns, the volunteers at civic institutions, the people who ACTUALLY RUN local government in much of it - are defined benefit pensioners who have paid off their mortgages. I sure hope we have a reliable plan to keep making them!
The maddest one for me is councillors in general and council cabinet members and leaders in particular. In many cities it’s just unaffordable to both live there and be in charge of deciding the education, infrastructure and transport trajectory for it
