Came across this excellent discussion by @jamescrane.bsky.social of the nature-humanity problematic that opens D&G's ANTI-OEDIPUS through a key reference to the early Marx (via Granel).

we think Zourabichvili elaborates a ruthless 'Spinozist modernism', a less rosy Spinoza than I've warmed to in my path, but which like Beckett or Joyce is oddly compelling in its formalism and rigor to a fault. perhaps even a metaphysical brutalism: rehabilitate essence and form. truth is unsparing
spent several hours doing collaborarive work today, and I am always blown away by the extent to which thinking together with another is one of the greatest joys in this often melancholic world. paint your grey on grey in loving synthesis!

I think the desire for 'high quality' engagement online will grow as a consequence. Something resembling the forums/boards of old with barriers to entry of various forms, and shunning of low quality or manipulative engagement.
We're in an age of engagement, in which people are incentivised to gain as much attention as possible.

Using AI to flood feeds with images that will grab a bit of attention, and generating enough outrage to cut through the noise (Just Stop Oil) are a couple of examples of this.

hard to exaggerate how nuts the engagement is on Bluesky compared to 𝕏. a vastly smaller user base (at least officially), but just look at these stats for one of the biggest newspapers on Earth. Musk has absolutely trashed the platform. folks, you are not locked in on 𝕏. not even a little.

Brilliant summary by @devingoure.bsky.social of the philosophical context for what's going on in the opening sections of ANTI-OEDIPUS.

I'll be using it as a reference for my own writing project that will take place alongside the Schizoanalysis Project.

Abstractions explain nothing, they themselves have to be explained: there are no such things as universals, there's nothing transcendent, no Unity, subject (or object), Reason; there are only processes, sometimes unifying, subjectifying, rationalizing, but just processes all the same.

Pragmatics (dealing with the circumstances of language use, with events and acts) was long considered the "rubbish dump" of linguistics, but it's now becoming more and more important: language is coming to be seen as an activity,

The vibe on this site is pretty much liberals patting themselves on the back. Kinda cringe.

The other site is just vicious and stupid, and having been on it less I notice the algorithm working to incite engagement.

In general, social media is corrosive to society and should probably be banned.

Thing is, it's so widespread that it has become transparent. I don't know how a thinking person is still drawn in by the "You won't like x" routine.

One needs to develop a certain aristocratic aloofness to the merchant class and their presumptions.
This piece about how salesmanship works and what it does to your soul is so magnetic that you eventually clock that the lessons of telemarketing are being subtly deployed on you as the reader.

Caravaggio’s Adoration of the Shepherds (1609). Fave nativity. No halos, nothing supernatural. Mary an ordinary slip of a girl. The shepherds probably modelled on guys C dragged straight off the street. No star, just the faintest hint of dawn to the left. The eye of the donkey serenely oblivious.
