Good systems engineering can be described in one sentence:

- More of the same.

There is a corollary to it:

- If it hurts, do it more often.

It's about brute force. Or, as another famous formula states:

Since I live in Vancouver, and Steve Yegge envisions his future AI town to be in Gastown, I wholeheartedly recommend his article. Also, I'm a big fan of "Slow Horses", so I find his similes irresistible.

Andres, The Scientific Atheist community representative, kindly joined me on my podcast to discuss one topic that's been on my mind for some time now -- wishful thinking, and its impact on the society at large.

Agenticity: the human tendency to assume an intentional agent behind complex patterns. It is why people once thought thunder had a god, disease had demons, and earthquakes had motives. Complexity feels personal, so we invent a person behind it.

My hunch is that finally, organizations will be forced to take a closer look at the quality of the software development discipline, and that coercion will come from mass adoption of AI-assisted programming.

I think our profession will morph into serious engineering that is focused on systems programming. Currently, all I'm seeing is experts tinkering with parts of the system, while the emergent behaviour of the system is something they don't seem to know how to reliably program.

I am now getting really excited about the new Mac Studios with their M3 Ultra chip that enables us to run our own AI cluster at home with everyday devices, using tech like exo (github.com/exo-explore/...).

Two years ago I was absolutely adamant that AI cannot possibly be used to assist in software development. After a series of infuriating experiences with AI, trying to build a modestly sophisticated system, I threw the towel in.

No religion is capable of withstanding protracted scrutiny. Watch any secular humanist discuss religion with the followers and you will see how the discussion quickly dissipates into personal attacks directed toward the secular humanist.

I am disappointed and upset that Christopher Hitchens was propagating the silly idea that superstition/religion is fine so long as the practitioners are not insisting on trying to make us play with their toys. Let's be clear: No, it's not fine to allow superstitious beliefs to infest our society.

A syllogism:

Premise 1. Mary gave birth to Jesus.

Premise 2. Jesus is the lamb of god.

Conclusion: Mary had a little lamb.

Show me a religious person, and I will show you a phenomenally stupid person.

- But, but, but... There are famous scientists who are religious!

- So? Just because someone is a famous scientist doesn't automatically guarantee they're not stupid.

I'm always in favour of minimizing dependencies on third party code. I've been involved in many rodeos throughout my career, and I've been bitten more often than I care to remember by flaky third party services/components.
