TWELVE TIMES?! No wonder Ford wants to stop cities from easily enforcing speed limits. globalnews-ca.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/globalne...

Using tear gas is banned under the Geneva Protocol of 1925. So, if Trump wants to characterize this as a "war from within", he's essentially conceding that the administration is committing war crimes, no?

This makes me feel crazy. Being aware of the speed limit is like step 1 for driving! "Stealing is illegal, sure, but how are people supposed to know which stores they can steal from without getting caught if the camera ones don't have giant 'NO STEALING' signs??"

www.thestar.com/news/gta/20-...
Chow is pushing for larger signage and changing Toronto’s program so that once a driver is fined for speeding the first time, they cannot be fined again for seven days. It gives drivers an opportunity to receive their fine in the mail and become aware of the camera’s location.

In order to convince the "law and order" premier to allow enforcement of the law, cities are promising to go easy on lawbreakers and give them a weeklong all-you-can-break pass? OK. www.thestar.com/news/gta/20-...

Well that was an entertaining game.

Honestly, what questions do you need to ask the speed cameras in cross-examination? What kind of gotcha moment are we expecting here?
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
Fourth, it would be intolerable to post a police officer every three feet because you'd be constantly stopped. Speed cameras don't impede you in that way. Also, speed cameras don't require the same salary as police officers.
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
Third, speed cameras only take your picture if you have broken the law. And even then the photographs aren't kept forever.
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
Second, the law is the law. If the speed limit is 40 km/hr, but we don't believe tickets should be given unless drivers are going 50, we should follow the democratic process to change the speed limit. We shouldn't just refuse to enforce.

A couple of notes on this @acoyne.bsky.social column. First, speeding is an absolute liability offence. Intention/explanations aren't relevant. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

The speed cameras are placed in Community Safety Zones. The frontages of all schools within Toronto are designated as CSZs.

@robertbenzie.bsky.social any idea what Ford is referring to here?
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
Right, but there's no amendment being considered here.

How does he think Ontario and Quebec could block a court decision that limits use of the Notwithstanding Clause?

What is Ford talking about? Does he think the feds are trying to push a constitutional amendment through Parliament? www.thestar.com/politics/pro...

I can't even tell if these are real anymore

So unfair! Aren't short kitchen cabinets also important for national security?

So we index the fines based on income or type of car.
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
The cameras are spread across the city and are only placed in community safety zones (adjacent to schools)

I believe that part of the post was satire, as I don't see anything in the announcement that suggests use of s.33. At least, I hope it was satire.

I've emailed/called the Premier's office and the Minister of Transportation. They keep track of public response, so it's worth a shot.

Mayor Olivia Chow is asking for changes to Toronto’s speed cameras as a part of a last-minute effort to get Premier Doug Ford to reconsider scrapping them altogether.

Speed cameras are more efficient than police. A TMU/Sick Kids study showed they decreased the number of speeding drivers by 45%. And, the alternative to using fines to pay for speed bumps is making everyone pay for speed bumps. Bad for safety and an attack on taxpayers (to use Ford's rhetoric).
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
I agree that our taxes should fund these things. I'm happy for my tax dollars to go to fund safety measures. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't fine those that speed and use the fines to pay for safety measures.
alexcolangelo.bsky.social
Not to mention they seem to veer toward socialism when it comes to the free use and abuse of roads. Where are their personal responsibility and user-pay principles here?
