We couldn’t do this advocacy without the work of the Death Penalty Information Center, so consider signing up for their email alerts. Amnesty International and state organizations such as Alternative to the Death Penalty are also worth the follow.

South Carolina plans on using a firing squad this month, which was butchered last time a state attempted it. This is what North Carolina is contemplating with its new crime bill.

…sustains it. Florida’s leaders insist that killing people and calling it justice somehow brings peace — that this relentless killing spree honors victims and heals families. It does not. It never has. It was a lie when it was told thirty years ago in this very case, and it remains a lie tonight.”

executions don't make communities safer or provide justice to a broken system of continuous violence. This bill is full of bad provisions, the Gov. said so himself (link). If we truly wanted to focus on crime & safety, we would look to solutions that are proven, not based in fear and vengeance. 4/4

These screenings have a history of ineffectiveness. This bill also paves the way to reestablish electrocution and gas as forms of execution - two methods that have botched execution cases in the past. Making it easier to perform executions by speeding up the process is inhumane... 3/4

This bill doesn't address the underlying issues that led to this legislation in the first place - that someone who needed proper services and had a history of crime was released multiple times w/o intervention. The only excuse in this bill is the creation of involuntary mental health screenings. 2/4
