I was so honored by the full house at my RTKL artist talk. I'm glad the underlying philosophy of my climate art resonated with folks, and I was asked if I'd share some of the slides online!

Text: Awake: the paranoid, anxious, grieving, conscious of systems of harm and oppression, and how they bleed into everyday objects and ways of moving through the world. Dreaming: the reparative, imaginative, active. Seeing the potential for the world as it could be, a form of hoping without hope. White text on a green and red field-- navigating the awake/dreaming modes as praxis. Stay Awake Without Losing Your Mind (in red) -Accept that you can't stay informed about everything all the time. -- Fascists and oligarchs will attempt to overwhelm resistance by doing a lot at once and seeing what sticks. -Pick a few key issues (3-5) to try and keep track of. -- Follow people doing the work on these issues -- Keep track of action opportunities -- Going narrower is okay, often better -Celebrate wins, no matter how small -Read print and/or long form around your issues when you can. -Pay attention to your body, learn when you are dysregulated or having a panic attack. The original shot is a shell gas station– there is a real bus stop here in front of the gas station, with two long benches, but there is no overhead shelter to provide shade or protection from the elements. In the Dreaming version, solar panels are built into the roof and provide shade between glass panels that let in natural light. Freely accessible outlets are set into the bus stop between the benches. The Dreaming version of the bus stop does not have commercial advertising space, but instead has community post boards advertising a variety of events– salsa classes, emo night at a club, a battle of the bands, and theatre in the park. Gas stations are notoriously terrible spaces to attempt to rehabilitate, and require years to remove the toxins from the soil. Sunflowers are particularly good at absorbing toxins, heavy metals, and radiation. The gas station building is replaced by a repair workshop. The Right to Repair movement is currently gaining traction around the world, with legislation forcing companies to no longer restrict access to repairing technology. In Baltimore, the Station North Tool library has biannually hosted “Fix it Fairs” for some time. The Dreaming World imagines institutions for whom this is not a pop-up event, but a regular function. These institutions would also be regularly interspersed around the city with ease of access, with as many repair shops as public libraries. The shape of the lamps at the bus stop were also considered for their environmental impact. Light pollution confuses and disrupts a lot of nocturnal animals. Lamps with robust conical shades provide adequate light for humans to move by night while minimizing disruption to nocturnal creatures by preventing light from emitting upwards. In this bus stop, I offer an elegant art nouveau inspired aesthetic, referencing the gorgeous Paris subway entrances.
