My current project is a schedule browser for Seattle-area public transit, with useful new features - http://schedulebrowser.kvenvolden.com

Big update to my schedule browser site: Canceled trips statistics version 2.0!

This is the first time this feature was touched since I launched the site in 2023, and it showed. The new feature is smarter, more customizable, and shows more data.

What I love about this is it went from a Westlake to SeaTac line to a lengthy Federal Way to Lynnwood line, while still retaining 10-8 minute frequencies outside evenings/early mornings. Taking the 90 minute trip from end to end today really makes it feel impressive. And ST2 isn't even done yet.
Seattle’s Link Light Rail (1 Line) is crazy long. 66 kilometres (41 miles) in one mostly straight line!

Every time I ride the monorail, it makes me wish Sound Transit wouldn't completely disregard elevated rail in dense areas like downtown. It feels so much faster than it is, and shows pretty clearly how inefficient driving in the city is. Seems like a weird thing to want to bury.

I have a Metro GTFS file from late 2009, so I can do a travel time comparison between Federal Way, SeaTac Airport, and IDS on route 194 (2009) and the 1 Line. For the selected trip in minutes:

FW - IDS, 194: 56, Link: 51 (-5)
FW - SeaTac, 194: 31, Link: 17 (-14)
SeaTac - IDS, 194: 25, Link: 34 (+9)

Snippet of a 2015 Federal Way Link Extension alignment diagram that matches closest to the one that was built shows Star Lake Station being built in a, trench? And diving into a tunnel under the HOV ramp roundabout? I wonder why they drew up this roller coaster when it ended up being fine elevated.

Saw this and thought, "Oh?"

Seems to me that it doesn't take a lot of expertise to understand that trains running more frequently doesn't make the trains themselves actually run any faster.

I really hope full 2 Line simulated service will allow passengers from Lynnwood to IDS. It will have to allow passengers anyway once it gets to S Bellevue. It's only the middle part along I-90 that's new rail.
On Nov. 25, from 4:30 to 9:30am, Sound Transit will test 4-minute run times for 1 Ln trains.

On Nov. 25, from 4:30 to 9:30 a.m., Sound Transit will test 4-minute run times for 1 Line trains. Test trains displaying “Out of Service” will run alongside regular service trains.

Trying to figure out what those lines mean.

2 Line on the 520 bridge?
N Line to Lynnwood?
Stride to... Duvall?
It's not a coffee shop, but it's something.

Opening day (Dec 6) schedule for Federal Way Link is up! Refer to ST for schedule of activities, but trains are scheduled to start out of Federal Way at 11:01. There is also a Star Lake-Federal Way only train leaving Star Lake at 11:08 shortly after the northbound train arrives.

Amazing how optimistic AI slop is about permitting reform in Seattle.

One of the many weird things about Sound Transit not doing bus changes for East/FW Link until the fall of next year is it'll be easier than it has ever been in history to get to Mountlake Terrace at peak without a car.

11 buses/hr (510 & 515)
15 trains/hr (1 & 2 Lines)

When view options were first added to TransitTimes, they looked like this. Since then, a ton more have been added, but they've stayed above the schedule. Now that they're moved into a dialog, it looks a lot less cluttered.

Are we going to do this 18 innings thing again or are we just going to finally win the ALDS?

It's so close, the schedule's even up! 1 Line service to Kent-Des Moines, Star Lake, and Federal Way opens Dec 6, and you can see it now on TransitTimes. Just set the date after Dec 6 and you can see yourself!

Also, note that the opening day schedule has not yet been published.

A funny thing about this map is that technically, it erroneously shows the 2 Line as operating in Seattle with the 1 Line, just not connected to the Bellevue side.

I became aware of a group called "Fix Route 40" that says we should do that by NOT adding bus lanes. Interesting.

Usually these groups have some ineffective alternative plan, but despite the implication of "fix route 40," they just stress that ridership is half of pre-covid and suggest nothing.

The RapidRide K Line (coming in the 2030s) stop at S. Kirkland P&R already has more of an ORCA card reader than the RapidRide A Line does at the Federal Way Downtown Station.

Got a chance to ride the entire route 269 before it gets changed on the 30th. It's surprisingly long (22 miles!) even before it gets extended next year. But it's weirdest in SE Redmond, which has a very circuitous travel pattern right before an express section! A funny consequence of circumstance.

Got a chance to ride route 246 before it goes away at the end of the month, and it's quite the scenic route! Some service is replaced by 203, and the Clyde Hill part has to wait 6 months for a replacement, but the rest of the route (including this scenic part) is going away forever 😢

I remember a while back when Angle Lake Station was about to open, ST was evaluating whether to move the 574 to connect at Angle Lake before the airport, but they ended up not doing that. If this 509 extension was open then and they used it, you could be on a train like 3 minutes after being on I-5.

What a well timed canceled trip on Seafair weekend!
August 2, 2025 at 8:42 PM
Seeing how Pierce Transit (poorly) operates its ST Express service to/from Seattle, when Federal Way Link opens early it'll be interesting to see if ridership on the 577/578 craters.

My schedule browser site is updated with a replacement for the very out of date welcome page. The years-old screenshots showing off features were quite stale, so I got rid of them and replaced them with a working schedule of a fake route & interactive feature tour!
