But the fact it goes in a different direction is PERFECT. “Now look at the mess you made me make” - proceeds to sing an album about the gap between perception and reality (and taco stands on the moon)

Adjusted for inflation, the original 1967 rate is over $350,000 today. But the actual cost of 2024 Super Bowl ad time is over *20 times that amount*. The rate of growth is a pretty good illustration of how much the ad industry has valued and continues to value the Super Bowl.

And finally, Super Bowl XXIX in 1995 was the first time spots cost over $1,000,000 to air, with ABC airing the game. Spots included Pepsi’s “Diner,” and the first Budweiser “Frogs” ad, which became a popular series.

In less than a decade the Super Bowl was popular enough that 30 seconds of airtime crossed $100,000 with Super Bowl VIII (1974). Super Bowl XIX (1985) passed $500,000. Super Bowl spots are A Thing by this point, with Apple airing their famous “1984” ad just a few years earlier.

Super Bowl I aired on both NBC & CBS, so had 2 different ad rates. Reporting tells us NBC was $37,500, and CBS was $42,500. It’s hard to confirm exactly what ads ran (which is its own whole story) but one memorable spot was Goodyear saying women can’t change tires. Yikes!
