In our algorithmic world, perceiving differently is more important than ever.

Here, working from the ‘The Politics in a Poem’, published earlier this year in C21, I argue poetry is uniquely placed to heal our polarised, misinformed society.

How? Because it records what we might not otherwise see.
How poetry can help to fight polarisation and misinformation
By encouraging people to imagine beyond their own experience, reading poetry can help them see things from a different perspective.

This story on AI aesthetics and the far right has so many great lines.

“Trump’s haircut, which we all seem to have become inured to, serves the same purpose. It looks like shit and that’s the point. It is a display of power and a small act of cruelty.”

AI: The New Aesthetics of Fascism
It's embarrassing, destructive, and looks like shit: AI-generated art is the perfect aesthetic form for the far right.

I hope this article demonstrates how poetry and solidarity can foster meaningful analysis. If you have a moment, I invite you to read and reflect.

In the UK, productive conversations are taking place regarding the alienation of working class peoples, particularly the young. However, these lose their meaning if they are not followed up with resources and funding to help keep in place and bolster community and wellbeing.

In Canada, Indigenous peoples face persistent erasure of their histories and communities. In an election where leaders are scrutinized for their views on Indigenous issues, it is particularly important to consider how political rhetoric and policy can inflict violence and destruction.

My research increasingly revolves around two pivotal questions: What can creative writing unveil in an increasingly opaque and resource-stricken world, and, what can the specificity of place reveal about the reality of abstract policy-making and rhetoric. This article explores both.

I am thrilled my article, ‘The Politics in a Poem,’ is in the latest issue of C21. Writing this piece was long, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. I am immensely grateful for the thoughtful feedback from peer reviewers and the meticulous attention of the editor, Alice Bennett.

This article examines the political dimensions of poetry through the lens of ‘peripheral reading’, considering textual representations of a place in relation to its socio-political context. It focuses...

Even those we love, we don’t know. Yet, always, we are perceiving others, and using those perceptions to shape ourselves. Occasionally, we see our own ethically murky but utterly necessary processes. I wrote about such a moment in ‘Visiting Hours’, three years ago: forgelitmag.com/2021/09/06/v...

The now is an era of utter anxiety. Play is as necessary as thought. Two years ago, emerging from a nasty case of Covid, a cold winter, a worsening climate, and some exciting encounters with Beckett and Joyce, I wrote ‘The Coin’. You can read it, here: pure.aber.ac.uk/ws/portalfil...
