beware of people who want to "protect" the children but are vehemently opposed to empowering children, giving them information so they can have agency, teaching them about consent, and actually listening to them

I hear what she’s saying, but her comments do obscure the way online hate is connected to systems of misogyny, racism, anti-Blackness, transphobia, fatphobia, homophobia, and other forms of oppressive violence. Logging off/tuning out can be individually healthy but it isn’t a collective answer.
Taylor Swift On Dealing With Online Hate: ‘Anything You Feed The Internet, It Will Kill’
On the "New Heights" podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, Swift talks about how she and Travis handle internet opinions differently.

Just reading @aliadastagir.bsky.social and this grabbed me:

‘Many men suggest women and especially feminist women are humourless, that we don’t make good comedians. But they don’t understand how much laughing we have to do just to survive.’

Lindsey Boylan has been tirelessly driving this message home since Cuomo first announced, all while knowing first-hand how he and his loyalists smear women who tell the truth. And she’s never backed down, even when pundits were portraying him as inevitable.

Please, NYC - don’t screw this up.

Thank you @dreamfornyc.bsky.social for these brilliant stickers.

New Yorkers, remember to rank five good apples NOT Andrew Cuomo and here is why: 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎
aliadastagir.bsky.social
When I interviewed @lindseyboylan.bsky.social for my book on online abuse, she told me women were among her most vicious attackers. The @nytimes.com reported the activists smearing Lindsey and Andrew Cuomo’s other accusers were quietly led by Madeline Cuomo, his sister.

Tonight I’m thinking of @lindseyboylan.bsky.social, the first woman to publicly accuse Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment. Lindsey was abused in her workplace, and she was further abused online after speaking out. She told me she “equated leading as a woman with a willingness to handle pain.”

I remember having this conversation over and over again during Depp v. Heard!

Journalists would ask me what made that case so unusual. My response was always nothing! It was an extremely typical and straightforward case of IPV.

It felt unusual because the media hardly ever depicts IPV accurately.

I think about it all the time, too! With the lack of reporting on these types of stories, the media was able to present Amber's victimhood like a gross anomaly rather than the simple truth that her experiences reflect the stories of so many survivors.
nbedera.bsky.social
I think all the time about how almost none of the big #MeToo stories were about intimate partner violence.

And the one that did get out—Johnny Depp’s abuse of Amber Heard—ended in a defamation trial that the media declared “the death knell of #MeToo.”

Thank you for writing!

Outrageously deserved. Sarah Wildman’s @nytimes.com piece asks crucial questions about the forms of care families of sick and terminally ill children deserve, exploring how we balance the human desire for truth with the human need for hope. What an honor to read her. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/25/o...

It’s vital to understand that this kind of abusive online speech has real, physical effects on the mind and body. It is violence. And it makes people affected more vulnerable to other forms of violence. I talked to @aliadastagir.bsky.social about her book on this spitfirenews.com/p/online-har...

This is SO IMPORTANT.
As society, we haven’t grappled with the significance of the fact that women, POC and LGBTQ people face so much more harassment and abuse online than straight white men do. And it’s dramatically impacting society and democracy.

Online harassment is an anti-speech tool that has been a longtime weapon for Trump and his allies. I talked to @aliadastagir.bsky.social about her book and the consequences of online abuse for women, journalism, and democracy itself. spitfirenews.com/p/online-har...

Before #MeToo there was #Gamergate and before that, #EverydaySexism If you followed these movements, you'll be familiar with the points made in this article. The internet is male-dominated. It's never been safe for women. Online harassment leads to a culture of silence. Anti-speech tool is accurate.
