If you’re ever in #Birgu in #Malta the Malta At War Museum is well worth a visit. The underground bomb shelter gives a glimpse of what life was like during #WW2 complete with a maternity room. There’s also loads of interesting artefacts to check out. #History #Europe #military #lestweforget #battle
In 1941, following prolonged indignation by shelter users the authorities instructed Shelter Supervisors to start setting aside one cubicle for the exclusive use of expectant mothers. These instructions applied solely for large public shelters. During the war years there was a sharp rise in the birth rate and demand for such rooms was very high. These rooms, known as 'Birth-rooms' were operated by the local District Nurse and child deliveries would have been assisted by a mid-wife.
