Thank you @csc.fi for the interesting visit to the energy-efficient data center in Kajaani. The home of supercomputers LUMI, PUHTI and MAHTI. 🖥️🖥️🖥️

MSc program in Computational Biology and Data Analysis (University of Oulu) provided this opportunity!
Thanks to @lehosmaa.bsky.social for company! 😄

The most related pairs of individuals belong to the 2nd family class (e.g., half-siblings) and they are located close to each other in the forest (and all within the same stand). The mean gene dispersal distance (σg) was 54 meters.

We found significant, but very subtle fine-scale structure (Sp between 0.0005 and 0.0008), which means that the mean relatedness decreased slightly when physical distance increased.

Long distance pollination and large effective density causes the weak fine-scale structure.

We found very low differentiation (FST = 0.0005) between the study stands, but there is some family structure, which is visible in the panel A of this figure. PCA doesn’t form clear clusters after removing related individuals (panel B).

With @pyhatanja.bsky.social et al. we used data on 150k SNPs to estimate differentiation between two study stands in the south-eastern Finnish forest and pairwise relatedness among 469 Scots pines.

Was just about to comment that no one has been to Finland, but you had made it here! 😄
