A new #Jepsen report! We worked with TigerBeetle to find seven crashes, elevated latencies during single-node failures, and requests which were retried forever in version 0.16.11. We found only two safety issues: missing results for queries with multiple predicates, and incorrect timestamps in a […]

Elon Musk wanted to buy Wikipedia so that he could determine our society’s collective view of truth.

He couldn’t, so he created grok.

Do not let these machines be arbiters of truth. It is abundantly clear that they are being used to push absurd far-right conspiracies.

A small issue in Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL: at the "Repeatable Read” isolation level, which in PostgreSQL normally means Snapshot Isolation, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL clusters appear to exhibit Long Fork. We observed this behavior in healthy clusters, in versions ranging from 13.15 to 17.4 […]

Restate is one of the coolest pieces of software I've encountered in quite awhile. Not often a tiny, well-crafted application comes along that forces you to fundamentally rethink software design.
Restate 1.2: a distributed durable execution engine, built from first principles
Restate 1.2 adds highly-available, distributed deployments and a graphical UI.

I'm calling this concept "the plug-and-play data stack". You can just install an Engine and your queries and pipelines will magically start using it. Need to flesh out the capabilities and cost metadata to help the planner/optimizer along.

forget AI IDEs. Here's what I want:

1. IDE that is as fast as ghostty
2. Includes search/indexing capabilities of JetBrains
3. speed and flexibility of cross-language compatibility and plugin system of VSCode
4. Recognizes venv on the first try
5. terminal and containers are first-class citizens

Do you want to write an article about nothing, but still sound slightly racist?

You can write about a person wearing a kufiya with this paragraph “Es gilt als Symbol des „palästinensischen Widerstands“ und ist eng mit dem Terror gegen Juden verknüpft.”

Speculation is growing that Snowflake is planning to acquire Redpanda—but why? What justifies the rumored high price tag? When you consider market trends, the Snowflake vs. Databricks rivalry, and the AI shift, the rationale starts to become clear. Here’s my take. jack-vanlightly.com/blog/2025/2/...
Why Snowflake wants streaming — Jack Vanlightly

Need to try it after having worked with Flink in AWS (Managed) and I still cry in YARN. It’s was like almost 10 years ago with the latter.

Again, we need blue/green deployments OOTB and 2.1 for a real cloud-native solution. We need better than double-digit-minute downtimes.

Continuing my exploration of running Flink jobs with the Flink Kubernetes operator, this time focusing on aspects like snapshot management, observability, UI access, and more.

I can’t listen to Leaders™ praising Musk or other mill/billionaires. I just want to design systems that need microsecond-accuracy clocks to not fall apart. I don’t have any time or desire to praise a plutocracy where 99% is left behind.

Unacceptable. The Italian version of “Once upon a December” (Anastasia) is not available on Spotify. Spotify still actively exploits artists and uses predatory patterns over their arts but can’t get the licensing of a Golden Globe nominee for Best Original Song
