Merry Christmas!
From my archives a never previously posted photo of a white wolf in a snowy landscape by the water's edge. What I like about this photo is how the ripples spread out from, and catch the reflection of the wolf with its head in the centre of the ripple.

Over the years, Christmas celebrations have become more popular in Japan. This tall tree was in the lobby of my hotel in Tokushima, Japan. However, Christmas is a still a normal working day in Japan, and Christmas is more of a commercial event. The big family religious holiday is New Year (Shōgatsu)

Bringing home dinner #2.
On the African savanna, a hyena mother brings home a haunch from a wildebeest carcass to share with her cub. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

Bringing home dinner.
Hyenas and play an important role as "cleanup crews", contributing to the health of the African savanna ecosystem. Here a spotted hyena carries the haunch from a wildebeest carcass home to her young.

Masai giraffe.
A beautiful young Masai giraffe with its distinctive jagged, irregular leaf-like blotches stands on a dirt road after a heavy rain and poses on the savanna among the acacia trees. The Masai giraffe is an endangered species due to habitat loss and illegal poaching.

The chef preparing unagi (freshwater eel) at a my favourite small specialty restaurant in Tokushima, Japan. The black barrel is full of live eels - you can't get any fresher! In the right background, the unagi is being grilled and is served over rice with a thick sweet soy sauce (kabayaki).

Spotted hyena.
After a deluge of spring rain, a spotted hyena stands on a muddy road in the savanna of the Serengeti, Tanzania, where they are pack hunters and scavangers. Their huge jaws and jaw muscles are bone-crushing, outmatching even those of a grizzly bear.

Sunrise breakfast.
A Masai giraffe on the Serengeti savanna buries its head in an acacia tree and grabs some breakfast at sunrise. The Masai giraffe are a darker subspecies with jagged irregular patches. Tanzania.

Where's mom?
A pair of African cheetah cubs stopped their play session and looked out across the savanna to see where their mother had gone, and maybe hoping she'd be able to catch a gazelle for their supper. Serengeti, Tanzania.

Earthquake damage. A magnitude 7.8 quake earthquake struck southern Turkey in February, 2023 near the Syrian border, and the city of Gaziantep, followed by a second 7.5 magnitude earthquake 9 hours later. I drove through the Gaziantep area in October, 2023 and the earthquake damage was still evident

An East African cheetah mother on the savanna in the Serengeti, Tanzania, looks back to check on her cub that appears to be temporarily distracted by some activity on the horizon. They are a vulnerable species that hunt down their favourite prey, Thompson gazelles, at speeds up to 113 km/h.

Year 2 #17, bee and butterfly garden. To my amazement the gaillardia (blanket flowers) in my bee & butterfly garden are putting out fresh blossoms. The bees have long since disappeared, but hopefully they are finding a home in the litter seen in the top right, which I will leave in place all winter.

Lion king. As the day cooled off, the beautiful dark-maned lion that had been sleeping off a huge meal in the shade of a bush moved out onto the sandflats of Lake Ndutu and assumed a relaxed post with his paws turned in. From his luxurious dark mane he is at least 5-6 yrs old and in his prime.

After a big feed, lions, like humans (think Thanksgiving), like to sleep it off. Before our safari guide would let us out of the vehicle he aways checked behind the bushes to make sure lions (or other predators) weren't hidden there. The animals paid little attention to humans inside safari vehicles

Impala bachelors. Young male impala are forced out of the large female herds protected by a single dominant male. They form small herds in marginal territory outside the main herd starting around 8 months of age. This pair seems to be playing the 'my horns are bigger than your horns game'.

Nice horns!
A male impala with an impressive set of horns appears to be saying "Hey ladies, check out these horns" as he tried to collect a harem by proving he's at his breeding prime. Female impalas don't have horns. Serengeti, Tanzania.

Secretary birds are endangered large birds of prey, endemic to Africa, that live on the grasslands and savanna. Their name comes from the long quill-like feathers at the back of their neck. They kill prey such as lizards or snakes by stomping on them or dropping them from great heights.

Symbiosis and commensalism. One of the famous natural phenomena is the annual migration of the huge symbiotic herds of wildebeest and zebras through the Serengeti in the spring. The egrets have a commensal relationship with the herbivores. Note the many newborn wildebeest in the photo.

A European roller perches among the long thorns of an Acadia tree waiting to swoop down on unsuspecting insect prey. I thought initially its was a lilac-breasted roller but a little research suggests is a European roller, which migrates to Africa in the winter. Lake Ndutu, Tanzania.

Dangerous if disburbed?
Closeups of two lion brothers sleeping off a meal in the shade of a bush. When male lions mature they are kicked out of their birth pride and often form a coalition with brothers or male cousins to increase their hunting success and their chances of taking over another pride.

The African hawk eagle is a large booted eagle (feathered legs) that lives in the Tanzanian woodlands and predates on medium-sized mammals & birds. A recent study showed a large decline in its population suggesting it may now be critically endangered. Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

A tawny eagle sits on a branch in a large tree in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania. They are large eagles that belong to the booted eagle group. They eat a large variety of live prey, will steal food from other birds (kleptoparasitism) and will also scavenge on carrion. Vulnerable species

A pair of well fed lion brothers take a siesta in the shade by the shores of Lake Ndutu, Tanzania. Although the 'lions share' of African lions live in Tanzania, with its huge population of prey species, even there they are considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and retaliatory killings

As explained yesterday, in an attempt to save the endangered Northern bald ibis in Turkey a breeding population was established in Birecik, Turkey. These photos show a semi-wild bird flying past the cliffs along the Euphrates River, and an adult and a juvenile bird in the local area.

Saving the bald ibis.
When the wild Turkish population went extinct, a new semi-wild colony of Northern bald ibis was established at Birecik, Turkey. The birds are placed in large cages in the late summer to prevent them from migrating & they are released again early in the year to breed locally.
