On a kitchen counter with hopelessly outdated tile and discolored grout, a packaged pound of butter stands vertically beside a covered red butter dish with a butter knife sticking out from under the cover, globs of butter visibly on the edges of both the knife and the cover. Beside the handle of the butter knife is a stick of butter, nearly half used but not properly unwrapped, more mangled like a wild animal attacked it.
