There has been persistent ridging of high pressure in the jet stream and at the surface, certainly at times contributed by the Bermuda High, defecting any rain systems to our north and south. Bermuda high still a factor to some degree but continental ridges are present too.

No surprise to see the drought situation has remained or worsened in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's drought update for the end of August (released yesterday). Many communities in all four Atlantic provinces observed extreme drought conditions. #NSwx #NBwx #PEwx #NLwx
The assessment of drought conditions at the end of August had almost all of the Maritimes region in some form of drought, with an extreme drought (red) now observed in several locations. The unshaded areas in northern Cape Breton correspond to abnormally dry despite the colour not appearing. (Image Courtesy: Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) The assessment of drought conditions at the end of August had much of Newfoundland experiencing drought conditions. An extreme drought (red) was observed on the northern Avalon to parts of the Bonavista peninsula. The unshaded areas in parts of western Newfoundland correspond to abnormally dry despite the colour not appearing. Low pressure is approaching south of Nova Scotia this morning with most of the wet weather offshore. Showers chances will linger, mainly east, and a chance of an isolated shower from a cold front will move into N.B. and P.E.I. Rain/showers into S/E Newfoundland later today. #NSwx #NBwx #PEwx #NLwx
Good Thursday morning, Atlantic Canada.

A trough of low pressure is approaching south of Nova Scotia this morning with a few showers and drizzle mainly along the coast and just off the Atlantic Coast, although a line of some showers has pushed inland into parts of Kings, Hants, Colchester and Pictou counties. Most of this will taper off this morning, but a chance of showers will linger over eastern Nova Scotia. Otherwise, partial clearing farther west in the province with a fair amount of sunshine for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island too, but in those two provinces a cold front will bring a chance of isolated showers later today. Meantime, the offshore low will develop rain and showers over much of southern and eastern Newfoundland later this morning and this afternoon.

As Allister said, there's a decent chance of catching aurora tonight from clear, dark skies. As always, low expectations and understand there's no guarantee. A camera will pick up lights way earlier than your eyeballs.

A chance to see the aurora borealis tonight. Clear and partly clear skies expected, but fog patches overnight. Tuesday we can expect sun and cloud across the Maritimes, lots of sunshine for Newfoundland. Except for parts of the coast, highs in the mid-20s. #NSwx #NBwx #PEwx #NLwx

Fair weather in the forecast for much of the region Friday, but shower chances increase, especially in western New Brunswick and southwest N.S. There is some wet weather in the long weekend forecast. Full outlook in ALT text or here: facebook.com/story.php?st... #NSwx #NBwx #PEwx #NLwx
Good evening everyone. For Friday we can expect a mix of sun and cloud for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island with the brightest conditions in the morning as cloud cover increases during the afternoon. An isolated shower could pop-up in Nova Scotia, mainly in the west and over Cape Breton, with some scattered showers in western New Brunswick with a risk of a thunderstorm in the northwest. Aside from some morning fog patches/drizzle in Newfoundland, a mix of sun and cloud is forecast.

High temperatures will range from 18º to 25º. South to southeast winds will gust between 20 and 40 km/h in the Maritimes. That will push any wildfire smoke north, and in the case of the West Dalhousie fire could push smoke into northern parts of Nova Scotia and parts of southeast New Brunswick and P.E.I. depending on concentrations which vary due to wind and fire behaviour. South and southwest winds will gust between 15 and 30 km/h in Newfoundland.

Long Weekend Outlook: The upcoming long weekend won’t be a washout, but there is some wet weather to talk about in the forecast. A trough of low pressure approaching offshore will push some showers into eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Friday night into Saturday, although some disagreement on how close the low will approach and how far west the showers will spread into Nova Scotia. But the bulk of rain will be for much of southern and eastern Newfoundland on Saturday. Meantime, a separate area of low pressure set to break down over southern Quebec will push through the Maritimes on Saturday. That's expected to develop some scattered showers in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island from west to east through Saturday and Saturday night. I'll have a more detailed timeline tomorrow as some uncertainty remains. A chance of showers will linger on Sunday, mainly over eastern regions in those provinces along with the western half of Newfoundland. Relatively fair weather is expected for Labour Day on Monday.
