In this excellent presentation, Professor Stephen Berry refers to formerly enslaved man and United States soldier Prince Rivers as "the Original Black Panther." His recounting of the life of this remarkable man fully justifies the sobriquet. The video's description reads, "University of Georgia professor Stephen Berry discussed Prince Rivers, once an enslaved carriage driver in South Carolina, who became one of the first men to join and one of the last to leave service in the Union Army. The Gettysburg College Civil War Institute hosted this event."

The Robert Fortenbaugh Memorial Lecture 2025
Here's this year's Robert Fortenbaugh Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. It featured a panel of three eminent historians, Drs. Drew Gilpin Faust, David Blight, and Stephanie McCurry. The moderators were Drs. Scott Hancock and Jim Downs, both of Gettysburg College. The theme was the Past, the Present, and the Future of the Civil War. I don't believe this theme was addressed during the presentation. According to the Gettysburg College website, the Fortenbaugh Lecture "takes as its central goal speaking to the literate general public without abandoning solid scholarly moorings." Sadly, I don't think they kept to that purpose.

Infantry resting from drills. National Archives Catalog, NAID: 524639. I came across this article from Professor Lesley J. Gordon: "When I began my research for Dread Danger: Cowardice and Combat in the American Civil War, my starting point was historian Bell I. Wiley. His works, dating from more than eighty years ago, offer some of the most detailed accounts of the soldier experience, not only in battle but in camp, on the march, and in prison. Wiley left very few topics untouched, and his archival research is still impressive.

If you receive an illegal order, you have a duty to disobey.

This isn’t controversial.

A President calling for the execution of anyone who reminds service members of this oath is showing us why the duty to disobey illegal orders is so important in the first place.
