While it's great that DeepSeek R1 is open source and very cheap, I genuinely do not understand the "US AI companies should panic" stuff. R1 seems to achieve similar performance to OpenAI's o1, a model that many do not care about nowadays since o3 looks to be much better.
Yea to be clear there is no confirmation of how much Deepseek cost to train beyond "trust me" but I am really enjoying the generative ai perverts squealing about it
