so whenever i see a politician mouth off about how uni education should be about maximising your income, i think of those smarmy, pretentious dickheads

but anyway, at uni there were three types of people: those who had grown up coding, those who had little/no coding experience but were interested and those who thought this'd lead to a well-paying job

and trust me, we could tell straight away who was in the third category and they had zero respect

apropos of nothing, i just remembered back to my days at uni

i studied software engineering because coding had been my hobby since i was 10, and now it's my job and ngl, it pays a pretty decent wage

but when i was unemployed, i still wrote code every day cos it's what i like to do

and sometimes this is hard to achieve cos most of us have this annoying tendency to view other people as people if left to our own devices

that's where active dehumanisation comes in: to establish and maintain the non-human status of the selected out-group

thank you, it was sort of deliberate, referring to how some people have been radicalised on social media against trans people and i was radicalised in the opposite direction

nah, it's just a symbol, it has no intrinsic meaning

therefore the meaning we attach to it can always be changed

when even the meanings of basic words can change, why would a flag be special?

on the other hand, i don't think saying you shouldn't fly the flag because of its past is going to shift the needle either

to me they're both just ways of making ourselves feel good about ourselves

personally i don't think a bunch of stickers is going to make much of a difference, not while racism is both the semi-official ideology of the government and the official one of the most popular party

it can be removed from it, symbols change meaning all the time after all, but only over a long period of time of actively working on it

and part of that is facing your past and accepting what horrors were perpetrated in the name of it

i'm telling a lie, there was an alteenative: wait for 40 minutes for a train to bradford foster square, walk across town to bradford interchange, then hop on a bus to halifax, and another one from halifax to home

a journey that would've taken me considerably longer than going to london

was gonna say one of the problems with developing infrastructure round here is that it's such a low base that if anything goes wrong, there are no alternatives

but i was busy catching a taxi cos turns out my train is fucked and the only alternatibe route is closed due to track improvement works

otoh let's not pretend that the south doesn't get massively preferential treatment when it comes to any kind of centrally allocated investment

it's just that we shouldn't allow local leaders to use it as an excuse to do fuck all
