Does your wife ever go to a knitting/crochet group? Great to meet up with others and there are a few in the faithful city (if that's where you are). Actually, there are groups all over the place now! Beginners welcome if you want to have a go ...

Tunisian crochet is addictive (but not from Tunisia!). You usually (but not always) use a single needle with hook (crochet) to pick up all stitches in the row (like knitting); then you work them off to finish with one loop on hook (crochet). Also use a larger hook size than for usual crochet. HTH
