People like John Dewey, a hero of mine, thought a lot about this back in the early 20th century, admittedly without fully resolving it. Worth revisiting their words and renewing their work today. The article above and its sources are a nice example.

Hopeful and worth understanding better, although I imagine part of the story here is it likely still represents a decline (and increased polarization), just from an especially high starting point.
