I was so disappointed in the Matrix when it reverted from imaginative to just more gunfire (slo-mo - big deal), watched in the cinema just after Columbine. Neuromancer in a whole different league, my favourite book.

Haven't read it in a long time but try Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis
