The cuts at the National Endowment for the Humanities go far deeper than any of these agencies - almost 70% of 179 people were terminated, despite no change to the agency's budget.

There were no savings here - only idealogical destruction. #NEH

"This far-reaching economic impact (of #NEA and #NEH) stabilizes and revitalizes communities, from rural towns to urban centers, and strengthens small and large businesses, fostering thriving local economies." - Jennifer Dorning, Pres. of the Dept. for Professional Employees, @aflcio.org

It’s a good thing that unions and employers have a shared interest in the robust funding of the NEA and NEH—because it’s going to take a united front to make it happen, writes Jennifer Dorning, president of the Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO.

For more than five decades, the Stonewall National Museum, Archives and Library in Florida has chronicled the LGBTQ community by collecting and sharing its history. But the museum is facing a hostile political environment and a financial crisis that may force it to find another home.

Hard to learn from history when the current ruling power destroys the funding that makes #history accessible and available and decimates the work of historians and institutions of higher knowledge. 🙄 #NEH

Tomato, tomahto. But it also explains a lot. Thoughts and prayers during a tragic moment? Nah, let’s use the high-five emoji instead. Jerks. Hence us essentially using jazz hands or celebration for a high-five.

You’re welcome.

It feels like yesterday and also like it’s been years. We loved our work and what we stood for. Even if we come back from this, it will take years or decades to build the trust again.

Today marks six months since almost all National Endowment for the Humanities grants were "terminated" and most staff were placed on leave and summarily fired a week later.

We're still dedicated to sharing the stories of the #humanities and the resilience of our grantees and staff. #NEH

A majority of NEH employees received an email placing them on immediate leave. The news comes just days after many humanities councils across the country were told their grants would be terminated.

This wouldn’t surprise us at this point.

It’s petty and ridiculous at this point.

60 years ago, September 29th, President Lyndon B Johnson signed into being the NEA and the NEH. Today marks the 1st day of National Arts and Humanities Month. And President Trump marked it by firing the majority of the National Council on the Humanities. Here is the statute that created the NEA/NEH.

It’s such a travesty and devastating to see the road this administration is steering the agency (and the country) down.
