i work on plants at a university in the US
As an early career researcher, I am desperately begging for some of our institutions to plant a flag before they're all gone. Collaborating doesn't get anyone any safety here, maybe try screaming and fighting? Otherwise we're all dominos

Columbia and Penn are trial balloons. How could anyone think they aren't going to export that to every US institution. They found another lever they can use and if it works they're going to keep pulling and keep pulling
10,000 percent — controlling the purse strings of science to wield influence or dismantle universities and other orgs is absolutely the end game.

And more university and org leaders need to call that out publicly.
This is a fucking shitty ass day but at some point STEM faculty have to recognize that what we are seeing happen with federal funding of biomedical research through the NIH and NSF is being used and manipulated to punish and defund higher education institutions.

7. My colleagues are afraid. Our work is scrutinized for forbidden works like "gender" and "climate". The pipeline of talent has been cut off. We can no longer train graduate students and postdocs. These are individual dreams crushed, causing collective damage that will take generations to undo.

It's amazing how fast you can dismantle science in the US

1. UPDATE

The NIH is still blocking most ongoing scientific funding over concerns about DEI, according to NIH sources and internal NIH correspondence.

The freeze has continued even after top NIH officials acknowledged that continuing to block the funding would violate a federal court order.

"in other words a second lavender scare"
NEWS: In USDA, multiple people have been asked to report the names of LGBTQ employee resource group leaders to higher-ranking officials, according to interviews with workers and a document reviewed by Mother Jones.

LGBTQ federal workers say they're terrified they're about to be fired for their gender identity, sexual orientation, or past efforts to support other queer and trans employees—in other words, a second Lavender Scare.

Because I can't figure out what regulatory capture process hollowing out the NSF serves, it only makes sense as craven capitulation by the director of the NSF. Maybe collaboration is a better term 🧪
Doug was a NSF program officer for a few of my projects before stepping into his role below. His loss is an example of the many negative impacts. I speak often on the value of collaboration and cost sharing to get the most bang for our buck. Losses like Doug’s work affect everyone in the U.S. 🧪
